Veto override fails in the Assembly

The Governor’s veto of legislation that would change how the Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources is selected will be allowed to stand.

The bill would have given the power back to the Natural Resources Board, taking it away from the Governor. State Representative Spencer Black (D-Madison), the sponsor of the bill, argued the change is needed to prevent politics from influencing the agency. Senate delays BadgerCare Basic vote (AUDIO)

In the state Senate, a bump on the road to a stripped down health insurance plan. The Senate was set to vote Tuesday on legislation that will establish benefits and appropriate funding for Governor Jim Doyle’s BadgerCare Basic Plan. But Majority Leader Russ Decker sent the bill (SB-484) back to a committee, saying some of his members want “a longer look.” Minority Leader Scott Fitzgerald jumped on that. “There are some serious issues that have emerged amongst members of the majority party’s caucus,” said Fitzgerald. “I hope there’s no arm twisting going on. I hope this isn’t about intimidating people into voting for this piece of legislation.” [Read more...]

Fletcher, Tetschlag Earn Horizon League Honors

For the third time this season, Ramon Fletcher and Kayla Tetschlag each were named Horizon League Player of the week.  It is also the 4th time in Tetschalg’s career she picked up the award.

Fletcher averaged 19.5 points, 3.0 assists, and 2.5 steals a game in a pair of Phoenix victories.  He hit the game winning shot with 11 seconds left in the Bracket Buster win over Indiana State.  Fletcher ties Butler’s Gordon Hayward for three recognitions this season.

Tetschlag registered 38 points, 12 rebounds and 5 steals in UW Green Bay’s 2-0 week.  She put in a career best 25-points Thursday’s blowout of UIC.  Tetschlag also will become eligible for the Horizon League Network’s “People’s Choice” award, which is announced each Thursday afternoon. Chicken ordinance ruffles feathers in Janesville

The Janesville City Council is ruffling some feathers by voting down an ordinance that would’ve allowed residents to keep chickens in their backyards. The chamber Monday night struck down the proposal to allow four hens on a residential property. Concerns were raised that the city lacks the resources to properly enforce the plan.

Logo bill to Assembly vote

A bill which could spell the end for Indian logos and mascots in Wisconsin schools is set for an Assembly vote today. The issue has been the subject of bills in seven consecutive sessions at the Capitol, but the author of this measure, state Representative Jim Soletski, thinks this is the bill that will finally get through to the governor’s desk. The Green Bay Democrat says that while support for the bill is primarily within his caucus, he also has the votes of “five or six” Republicans. [Read more...]
