Senate amends successor bill (AUDIO)

Legislation approved by the state Senate doesn’t provide for successors to state lawmakers in the event of enemy attack. State Senator Bob Jauch says the bill (SB 227) still provides for a virtual legislature and legislative committees, and a temporary seat of government for the legislature. “We are restricted by statute to actually meet in Madison, not necessarily in this building, but to meet in Madison,” Jauch explained. “We’ll change this to enable there to be an alternative location of their is an emergency where government has to continue to function.” [Read more...]

State of the Tribes at Capitol

The poor national economy has resulted in tough times for Wisconsin’s Indian reservations. That was part of the message delivered to state lawmakers today during the  State of the Tribes address at the Capitol. Saint Croix Tribal Chairman Lewis Taylor said the remote locations of reservations have made them more vulnerable than many other parts of the state. [Read more...]

Veto override fails in the Assembly

The Governor’s veto of legislation that would change how the Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources is selected will be allowed to stand.

The bill would have given the power back to the Natural Resources Board, taking it away from the Governor. State Representative Spencer Black (D-Madison), the sponsor of the bill, argued the change is needed to prevent politics from influencing the agency. He says Wisconsin’s outdoor policies should be based on science, not special interest groups. [Read more...]

Senate delays BadgerCare Basic vote (AUDIO)

In the state Senate, a bump on the road to a stripped down health insurance plan. The Senate was set to vote Tuesday on legislation that will establish benefits and appropriate funding for Governor Jim Doyle’s BadgerCare Basic Plan. But Majority Leader Russ Decker sent the bill (SB-484) back to a committee, saying some of his members want “a longer look.” Minority Leader Scott Fitzgerald jumped on that. “There are some serious issues that have emerged amongst members of the majority party’s caucus,” said Fitzgerald. “I hope there’s no arm twisting going on. I hope this isn’t about intimidating people into voting for this piece of legislation.” [Read more...]

Fletcher, Tetschlag Earn Horizon League Honors

For the third time this season, Ramon Fletcher and Kayla Tetschlag each were named Horizon League Player of the week.  It is also the 4th time in Tetschalg’s career she picked up the award.

Fletcher averaged 19.5 points, 3.0 assists, and 2.5 steals a game in a pair of Phoenix victories.  He hit the game winning shot with 11 seconds left in the Bracket Buster win over Indiana State.  Fletcher ties Butler’s Gordon Hayward for three recognitions this season.

Tetschlag registered 38 points, 12 rebounds and 5 steals in UW Green Bay’s 2-0 week.  She put in a career best 25-points Thursday’s blowout of UIC.  Tetschlag also will become eligible for the Horizon League Network’s “People’s Choice” award, which is announced each Thursday afternoon.
