Some Wisconsin lawmakers want to amend the State Constitution to prohibit the federal government from requiring residents to purchase health insurance.

“Forcing people to buy a product — mandating that a person must buy a product — that is not constitutional to require people to purchase something.”

Senator Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin) says there is a vast amount of public opposition to the federal mandate, and that’s why she’s asking Senator Jon Erpenbach (D-Waunakee) to schedule a public hearing.

However, the chair of the Senate Health Committee says a hearing would be a waste of the limited amount of time remaining in the legislative session. “It is a waste of time and I think Senator Lazich knows it [Read more...]

Tallan’s talent subject of bill (AUDIO)

A child prodigy’s problem leads to legislation. Tallan Latz is a ten year-old blues guitar prodigy who hasn’t performed in a Wisconsin tavern since his dad, Carl, received a letter from the state telling him kids cannot perform where alcohol is served. “You know he can be in those establishments, and I can legally hand him a beer,” Latz told the Senate Committee on Children and Families. “So it’s okay under the current law for me to hand him something to drink, but if I hand him a guitar, now that is considered child endangerment.” [Read more...]

More on Tod Kowalczyk’s departure from Green Bay

Former Green Bay Phoenix coach Tod Kowalczyk left Green Bay after 8-seasons as head coach to take the head coaching job at Toledo.

Kowalczyk received a 5-year contract with a base salary of $280,000.  The deal includes incentives that could push his annual pay well over $300,000.

At Green Bay, Kowalczyk’s base salary was $133,132, but his total compensation package raised him to around $200,000.

Kowalczyk is taking assistants Jason Kalsow and Angres Thorpe with him to Toledo.  Staying behind to assume control of the Green Bay program is former Marquette star and Green Bay assistant Brian Wardle.  Kowalczyk has lobbied for Wardle to take over as the head coach.  If Wardle isn’t given the job, then he’ll join Kowalczyk’s staff at Toledo. Wardle said he’s confident the program will move forward.
