Deane fired at Wagner

Former Marquette men’s basketball coach Mike Deane was fired by Wagner on Monday. 

Over 7-seasons at the school, Deane went 95-113, including a 5-26 overall mark and a 3-15 record in the Northeast Conference this season.

Deane’s overall career record now stands at 437-332 in 26 seasons as a head coach.

Marquette and Louisville battle for fourth place in Big East tonight

This was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Marquette Golden Eagles.  Conference coaches picked them to finish 12th in the Big East Conference at the start of the season. 

Now, they’ve won 10-Big East games (10-6) and could equal last years conference win total of 12 games by winning their final two. 

The Golden Eagles host Louisville tonight at the Bradley Center with sole possession of fourth place in the conference to the winner.  Louisville comes in having won their last three road games, including a win at U-Conn on Sunday.  Marquette has won their last three as well, all coming in overtime.

The Golden Eagles started 2-5 in Big East play.  They’ve gone 8-1 in league play since then (19-9, 10-6). 

Following tonight’s game, Marquette closes out at home against Notre Dame.

Skiles named Eastern Conference Coach of the Month

SCOTT SKILES The NBA has named Milwaukee Bucks head coach Scott Skiles the Eastern Conference Coach of the Month for February.

Skiles led the Bucks to a 10-4 record in the month, including a six-game winning streak from February 19-27, making Milwaukee the only team in the Eastern Conference to record 10 wins in February.  It was Milwaukee’s first month with double-figure wins since going 11-6 in December of 2006.

This is the third monthly honor for Skiles, who also won the award in April 2006 and January 2005 while with the Chicago Bulls.  It is the first time a Bucks coach has been honored since George Karl won the award in January of 2003.

Stone named women’s Big Ten Coach of the Year

Lisa StoneWisconsin women’s basketball coach Lisa Stone has been named the 2009-10 Big Ten Coach of the Year.  Stone led the Badgers to a 20-9 overall record and 10-8 Big Ten mark (T-2nd).  She said this award is not just about her.

Stone picks up her first Big Ten Coach of the Year award.  She earned Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year honors at Drake in 2001 and was also a six-time Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Coach of the Year. [Read more...]

Income reciprocity benchmarks hearing

Lawmakers talk about the income reciprocity agreement between Wisconsin and Minnesota.

State representatives at the capitol hold a public hearing to discuss the long-standing agreement between the neighboring states that was recently cut off by Minnesota’s governor. Democrat Ann Hraychuck of Balsam Lake says the initial goal of her bill is to create a benchmark study. [Read more...]
