While Governor Jim Doyle accepted an award at Marian University in Fond du Lac, he used the event as a platform to talk about how Wisconsin will emerge from the downturn in the economy. Doyle says the state will prosper as there is investment into reaching quality. “Quality is not about chasing low wage jobs it’s about competing at the high end for high, for highly engineered, highly sophisticated products,” said Doyle.
Packers could lose two veterans
The Green Bay Packers were busy negotiating with veteran left tackle Chad Clifton but couldn’t reach a deal yesterday, so Clifton became a free agent and is expected to visit with the Washington Redskins today.
The Redskins need a left tackle after injuries forced Chris Samuels to retire. Clifton and Samuels share the same agent, Jimmy Sexton.
Defensive end Aaron Kampman (pictured) also became an unrestricted free agent late Thursday night and various reports indicate that he could be headed for a visit with the Seattle Seahawks.
Sean Jensen of the Chicago Sun Times reported that Seattle may already be working on a deal with Kampman’s agent.
Protest at UWM gets out of hand
The ACLU of Wisconsin is calling for a review of how police handled a protest at UW-Milwaukee. Cops used pepper spray to break up a rally calling for a tuition freeze. The crowd of about 150 people had gathered outside the building that houses the office of the school chancellor. When only one member of the group was allowed into the building, campus police chief Michael Marzion says the protestors who were turned away punched and kicked officers while some also threw snowballs and ice at the officers.

Governor renews call for MPS reform

Doyle says members of the MPS school board and some Democratic lawmakers continue to cling to the status quo, rather than working to change a system that is failing. [Read more...]
