Collins signs qualifying offer with Packers

Nick CollinsIn an effort towards securing a long term deal with the Green Bay Packers, safety Nick Collins took himself off of the free agent market yesterday by signing a 1-year, $3.3-million qualifying offer.

Collins and his agent called it a good faith effort, with the thought of trying to come to terms on a long-term deal in mind.

Agent Alan Herman told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Collins has a desire to stay with the Packers and to take part in the off-season program.  Herman said, “Nick really likes it in Green Bay and wants to stay there.  Hopefully, this will help us finalize a deal as we move forward.”

Collins was a Pro Bowl starter this past season, his second straight Pro Bowl appearance.  He has recorded 13 interceptions over the last two NFL seasons.

Amish win as judge dismisses premise registration case

A Clark County judge has ruled in favor of a Loyal-area Amish farmer who refuses to comply with Wisconsin’s mandatory livestock premise registration law.

In a decision filed Tuesday dismissing the case, Judge Jon Counsell rules the State did not show that the controversial law “furthers the State’s interest in animal health and food safety.”

The state had filed a civil complaint against Emanuel Miller Jr., an Old Order Amish farmer who refused to comply with the law, which requires all properties where livestock are housed to be registered with the state. [Read more...]

Brewers beat Cubs 5-3

The Milwaukee Brewers evened their Cactus League record at 3-3 with a 5-3 win over the Chicago Cubs in Mesa on Tuesday. 

Jeff Suppan held the Cubs scoreless in the first to extend the Brewers scoreless innings streak by starters to 12.  That streak ended after the Cubs scored twice in the second and once in the third off of Suppan.

Joe Inglett, trying to win the final spot on the Brewers 25-man roster, clubbed a 2-run homer in the 9th inning.  Derrek Lee homered in the loss for the Cubs.

The Brewers face the San Diego Padres today.

Bar owner charged with arson of own establishment

Marquette faces St. John’s in Big East Tournament today

The Marquette Golden Eagles will take on St. John’s in the second round of the Big East men’s basketball tournament today.

While Marquette had a first round bye, St. John’s advanced to today’s game by rolling to a 73-51 win over Connecticut in opening round play yesterday.

The 5th seeded Golden Eagles enter play with a 20-10 record and has a 10-game win streak against the Red Storm.  Tip time today is around 1pm and will be televised live by ESPN.
