Going after unused transportation money

Millions of unspent transportation dollars could be returned to the federal government, under a proposal from U.S. Senator Russ Feingold.

The Wisconsin Democrat is offering an amendment to an aviation bill in the Senate that would reclaim money that was set aside for transportation projects that haven’t moved in years. Feingold says the plan could help return at least $626 million to help pay off the national debt. [Read more...]

Veterans urge less reliance on fossil fuels (AUDIO)

Will the U.S. military lead the way to greener technologies? That argument was made at the Capitol Wednesday by members of Operation Free, a coalition of veterans urging the U.S. to decrease dependence on fossil fuels. Robin Eckstine is a native of Neenah who started thinking about the issue while driving trucks in Iraq. “I wondered to myself as we were hauling fuel and water everyday, if we had less trips outside the gate, that would mean less risk to American lives, less risk to my life,” Eckstine said. “Why weren’t we being just a little more energy efficient, and solving this problem?” [Read more...]

DNR extends air quality advisory

Wisconsin is going through its longest stretch of soot pollution since February of 2005. according to the state DNR.  The air has not been moving very much since last Sunday. The agency’s Air Monitoring Section Chief Bart Sponseller says it’s unusual but not unprecedented.

Racine student documentarians on a roll

Just as the country revisits the issue of nuclear power, three middle school students from Racine have won C-SPAN’s 2010 student cam documentary contest with an entry called “Got the Power,” about the need for future clean energy and the future of nuclear power plants.

St. Norbert College moves into NCAA hockey quarterfinals

The St. Norbert College men’s hockey team moved into the NCAA Division 3 quarterfinals, beating Adrian College 4-3 on Wednesday night. 

The Green Knights entered as the top seed in the West Region and will now face Gustavus Adolphus in Saturday’s quarterfinals. 

St. Norbert College is vying for their 6th appearance in the NCAA Division 3 Frozen Four, held this year at the Olympic Arena in Lake Placid, NY.  The last time the Knights made the Frozen Four field was 2008 when they won their first ever hockey championship.
