Wild scene at killer’s sentencing

It was a wild scene inside Clark County Circuit Court Monday, as a convicted killer was whisked off to begin his prison sentence. Tyler Meier was hoping to avoid prison time after pleading ‘no contest’ to felony murder-battery for landing the punch that caused 43-year-old Keith Young’s death.

Young and Meier were at the Brickyard Bar and Restaurant on February 1st of last year. Meier punched Young, he fell, apparently hitting his head on the floor. Young was hospitalized in critical condition from shortly after the assault, to the time of his death on February 3. Wood County Judge James Mason heard from a private investigator hired by the defense, who said he believed Meier should only receive probation. Sanders Englesgjerd said he believed Meier suffered from alcoholism, which led to his lengthy criminal record, but he believed he had changed his life. [Read more...]

Ryan says reform will lead to rationing

As a key House committee voted Monday to advance the Obama administration’s health care reform plan, a Wisconsin congressman repeated his longstanding objections to the direction the legislation is taking.

“It didn’t have to be this way, and it doesn’t have to stay this way” said Representative Paul Ryan. “At the Blair House summit, Vice President Biden claimed that we aren’t qualified to speak for the American people. I respectfully disagreed then, and I respectfully disagree now. The people we represent, and I’d suspect most of here, passionately believe that we need to fix what’s broken in health care. Bogut named Eastern Conference Player of the Week

The NBA announced today that Milwaukee Bucks center Andrew Bogut has been named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games played March 8 through March 15.

Last week, the Bucks went 3-0 with wins over Boston, Utah and Indiana.  The three wins extended the teams winning streak to 6 games and 12 of their last 13.

During the stretch, Bogut led the team with 19.3 points, 13.7 rebounds and 3.7 blocked shots.  He recorded a double-double in all three games, including a 25-point, 17-rebound night in the Bucks 86-84 win over the Celtics.

Bogut is averaging 16.2 points, 10.4 assists and 2.5 blocks per game on the season.

Spring temps will give way to snow

Wisconsinites capped off the weekend with spring-like temperatures but we won’t see a repeat on Saturday. Meteorologist Chris McGinness of WDJT Milwaukee says the state saw unseasonably warm temperatures.

Sweet bill to be signed into law

Wisconsin honey producers will get new protections under a bill being signed into law today by Governor Doyle. The new law requires the state Ag Department to establish “honey standards,” and prohibits products from being labeled as Wisconsin honey if they fail to comply. State Representative Phil Garthwaite (D-Dickeyville) is the author of the measure.
