Ryan says Dems horse trading for health care votes (AUDIO)

“You can’t count her out, because she’s been very good at getting votes.” That from Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan Friday, as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi works to round up Democratic votes for health care reform. “Cap and trade, they were down 24 votes the night before. At three in the morning, they brought a 400 page amendment giving away all this pork, all these goodies and special interest deals to members to get them to vote for it, and they ended up passing it by eight votes,” Ryan said. “That kind of horse trading, that kind of carrot and stick muscle job, is occurring right now.” [Read more...]

Rock County teen sentenced in overdose death

A 14-year-old Edgerton girl accused in the drug overdose death of a 13-year-old boy has been sentenced to state custody for the next five years.

Rock County District Attorney David O’Leary says Ashlee Brown will serve under the serious juvenile offender program, which was the maximum penalty possible under the juvenile system. He says it was appropriate based on the serious nature of the offense. [Read more...]

Proposals at capitol both cloudy and transparent

Wisconsin has a strong tradition of openness regarding meetings and records, according to an open government advocate. Bill Lueders, President of the Wisconsin Freedom of Information Council, says laws enacted in the 1980′s established these practices. Currently at the state capitol, he says “there are good things and bad things happening legislatively.”

Blast from the past takes on foreign policy of today

UW-Madison was among the politically charged campuses during the Vietnam era with teach-ins involving faculty occurring back then. This weekend an event tacking the tough foreign policy questions of today is being organized by Sociology Professor Joe Elder who attended UW teach-ins during the 60′s and 70′s.

Badgers’ Smith & Geoffrion named Hobey Baker finalists

Wisconsin Badger junior defenseman Brendan Smith and senior forward Blake Geoffrion are among the 10 players named finalists for the Hobey Baker Award, which is given to college hockey’s top player.

Smith is the only defenseman among the top-10 finalists.  He leads all defensemen in the country with 44 points (15 goals, 29 assists).  The WCHA Defensive Player of the Year and an All-WCHA First Team selection, Smith ranks in the top 17 nationally among all players in points-per-game and assists-per-game.  [Read more...]
