Debating cost of health care bill

One of the key issues with health care legislation is the cost, which varies depending on who you ask.

U.S. Representative Ron Kind, a Democrat from La Crosse, says the bill is not only paid for, but will actually reduce the deficit. “It was fiscally responsible according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.”

Kind tells reporters on a conference call, the CBO scored savings of over $140 billion in the first 10 years of enactment and an additional $1.2 trillion worth of savings in the second ten years.

Not so, says U.S. Representative Paul Ryan, a Republican from Janesville, who calls the bill a “fiscal Frankenstein,” on the House floor. “This bill is the mother of all unfunded mandates.” [Read more...]

Slashing Medicare= trimming the fat?

House members that voted against the health care bill say it will create mounds of federal debt and slashes billions in funding for Medicare. Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (D-Madison) responds to the claims by citing an “outrageous” case of Medicare inefficiency in Texas last year. Two counties that had similar demographics and one county spent nearly double per Medicare patient than the other. Baldwin says the bill will reward efficiency.

Badger Men’s Hockey earns #1 Seed

As the Badger Men’s Hockey team skated in the third place game of the WCHA Tournament Saturday, they knew a win would bode well for their NCAA seeding.  After a 6-3 victory over Denver, the Badgers got what they hoped for.

Wisconsin is the #1 seed in the West Region of the 16-team NCAA Hockey tournament.  The Badgers (25-10-4) will skate with Vermont (17-14-7) Friday night in St. Paul.  Wisconsin Head Coach Mike Eaves likes how consistent his team has been this year:

Point wins D3 Basketball Crown; St. Norbert 2nd in Hockey

With much of the state focused on the Badgers in the NCAA tournament on the basketball court and skating in the finals of the WCHA Hockey tournament, a pair of Wisconsin schools looked to earn hardware in Division 3.

The Stevens Point Men’s Basketball squad claimed the D3 National Title Saturday with a 78-73 victory over Williams College.  Matt Moses had 22-points to lead the Pointers and earned himself the tournament’s most outstanding player award.  It’s Points 3rd title in the last 7-years; they won back-to-back crowns in 2004 and 2005.

The Division Frozen Four also took place over the weekend.   St. Norbert fell in the finals 2-1 in double overtime to Norwich College out of Vermont.  St. Norbert Goalie B.J O’Brien was named the tournament’s most outstanding player despite the loss.  O’Brien’s 70-saves in the final set a NCAA tournament record.  It was St. Norbert’s 4th final appearance in the last 7-years.

Green Bay moves on; Wisconsin eliminated

The NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament opened up this weekend with a pair of state schools in the draw;  12th seeded Green Bay upset 5th Virginia 69-67 while 7th seeded Wisconsin was upset by 10th seeded Vermont 64-55.

Green Bay led by as many as 16-points in the second half but went the final 12:17 without a field goal allowing Virginia to fight back.  The free throw line is where the Phoenix saved themselves shooting 94% on the game.  Hortonville native Celeste Hoewisch had 23-points to lead the way.
