The politics of the health care overhaul

The political effects of a federal overhaul of the health care system signed by President Obama could take some time to see clearly.

UW political scientist David Canon says got their bill, Republicans got their chance to tell Americans how bad it will be. He says action on the measure was a must for Democrats, since a loss would have pretty much marked the end of their political agenda for the current Congressional session. [Read more...]

Panel splits on expelling lawmaker

The committee considering the expulsion of state Representative Jeff Wood (I-Chippewa Falls) failed to reach a consensus Tuesday on the proposal, splitting the vote along party lines.

Ethics Committee chair Mary Hubler (D-Rice Lake) was among Democrats who wanted to simply reprimand Wood, after he was arrested three times in one year on suspicion of driving under the influence. Hubler says those charges have not yet bee resolved, and it would be embarrassing to have removed Wood from office if they are eventually dismissed. [Read more...]

Caledonia Police Chief retires amidst investigation

Questionable payments for squad car work leads to an investigation and the pending retirement of a long time Racine County law enforcement officer.

Caledonia is the largest village in the state and Chief Jeff Meier has been a cop there for almost 35 years. He’s taking responsibility for allowing payments to relatives and friends who actually did squad car work for tax purposes, an issue which raised numerous questions. [Read more...]

DOT wants your rail views

The state’s transportation agency wants your opinion on railroads in Wisconsin. WiDOT is developing a statewide, long-range rail plan, the Wisconsin Rail Plan 2030 (PDF), to address rail needs. “The information that we receive from the questionnaire will help us understand better what the public is interested in and what the top issues should be for the DOT and rail in Wisconsin,” says Aileen Switzer, DOT’s chief of statewide planning. Green Bay Women aim for Sweet 16

The UW Green Bay Women have never made it past the second round of the NCAA women’s hoops tournament.  Tonight, the 12th seeded Phoenix (28-4) draw 4th seeded Iowa State (24-7) with a trip to the Sweet 16 on the line. 

Green Bay upset Virginia Sunday 69-67 for their first tournament victory since 2007.  With their 12th seed, the Phoenix are the lowest remaining seed in the field.
