Merrill workers go on strike

The International Machinists Union at Merrill Manufacturing began striking Wednesday over the lack of a new labor contract.

Company President Patrick Taylor is asking for wage and benefit concessions to weather the economic recession. The union has said it will accept the cuts, as long as the company ends them when the economy recovers. Taylor declined to comment on union claims that the company won’t agree to that deal. Van Hollen’s request denied

The Governor and Legislative leaders are letting the Attorney General know there’s little chance the state will file a lawsuit challenging federal health care reforms.

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen sent a letter Tuesday morning, requesting authorization for the state to file a lawsuit against the bill that was signed into law earlier this week. Van Hollen believes the bill is unconstitutional because it mandates individuals purchase insurance coverage. The Attorney General can only launch a legal battle if the Governor or Legislature requests the action. [Read more...]

Please, don’t expand NCAA Tournament field!

We’ve all been hearing NCAA men’s basketball coaches in recent weeks, lobbying to expand the NCAA men’s basketball tournament field from the current 65 teams.

The talk show wizards have been allowing many of the games coaching legends to swallow up air time for their cause.

Restricting felons from hunting

Felons aren’t supposed to have firearms – but there’s nothing to prevent them from buying a hunting license. State Representative Jeff Smith (D-Eau Claire) lost a friend in 2006. The man was killed by a member of his own deer hunting party who, as a convicted felon, was not allowed to have a gun. “The hunting party members were not aware that he had a felony, and should not have been carrying a firearm,” Smith said. “The family has asked to resolve that conflict between selling a firearm license versus that fact that a person is not supposed to be carrying a firearm.” Smith said legislation he’s proposing will provide penalties for felons who hunt illegally, and give the Department of Natural Resources more resources to locate individuals who are breaking the law. Brewers make roster moves

The Milwaukee Brewers made a series of roster moves as opening day draws closer.

The Brewers today returned left handed pitcher Chris Capuano to minor league camp, which means 34 players remain in Major League camp.

Left handed pitcher Scott Schoeneweis has been released by the club.

Third  baseman Mat Gamel and right handed pitcher David Riske have both been placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Outfielder Jim Edmonds has been added to the Brewers Major League roster from their triple (A) club in Nashville.  With the addition of Edmonds, the Brewers’ 40-man roster now stands at 39.

The Brewers are facing the L.A. Dodgers in Cactus League action today.
