High speed rail? Not so fast.

New legislation would put the brakes on the proposed Madison to Milwaukee line. High speed passenger rail would cost too much money and put too much of a strain on the state’s transportation fund, according to State Representative Brett Davis (R-Oregon).

Davis, candidate for lieutenant governor, says the $810-million from the federal government comes with a price. “The nonpartisan Fiscal Bureau has reported it was going to take at least an annual subsidy of $7.5 million from state taxpayers to operate this train.” And, Davis says, at 60 bucks a round trip, hardly anyone will ride the train.

Republican gubernatorial candidate, current Milwaukee County Executive, Scott Walker says the money could be better spent elsewhere, including on highways throughout the state, especially the crumbling Zoo Interchange in Milwaukee. [Read more...]

Raw milk bill advances

The author of legislation which would allow for regulated sales of raw milk on dairy farms believes he has the votes to pass the measure. Tuesday, a committee of the state Assembly voted to approve an amended version of the bill which allows for the sale of raw, unpasteurized milk and other dairy products. [Read more...]

Kowalczyk accepts Toledo post

Tod KowalczykThe University of Toledo has called a news conference for 2pm today to name Tod Kowalczyk its new men’s basketball coach.

Kowalczyk is 136-112 in his 8 seasons in Green Bay.  The Phoenix went 22-13 this season, good for third place in the Horizon League.

Kowalczyk will replace Gene Cross, who resigned earlier this month after posting an 11-53 record in two seasons.

The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will likely hold a news conference soon thereafter, to discuss their coaching vacancy.

Vigil for domestic homicide victim

A candlelight vigil is held in Racine for a woman shot and killed last week by her live-in boyfriend, who then took his own life, leaving three young children in the care of relatives. Racine Women’s Resource Center Director Cheri Griffin said the death of Starkeesha Wilkins is another example of domestic violence.

Bill limits the use of mail-in rebates

A business group lobbies to stop legislation that would limit how mail-in rebates could be used.

Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce opposes the measure (SB 560), saying it would prevent consumers from potentially saving lots of money. That’s according to the group’s director of legislative relations, R.J. Pirlot.

“The bill effectively bans mail-in rebate programs,” he says, “We just don’t think it’s right to ban a legitimate business practice and deny these sorts of options for Wisconsin consumers.”

Senator John Lehman (D-Racine) explains his legislation, saying the advertised price of any product, including discounts, must be the price a consumer pays at the time of purchase. He says it’s misleading to require consumers to use mail-in rebates to get that advertised price. [Read more...]
