As spring breakers plan on taking a trip south of the border, the US State Department has warned of increasing violence in areas of Mexico. Joel Dhein, President of the Wisconsin Crime Prevention Practitioners Association (WCPPA), suggests traveling in groups and knowing the laws of the land. He says to those making the trip; keep in touch with your family.

Mexican gunmen have been known to impersonate police officers or military. Dhein suggests travelers research online how impersonation takes place to be prepared if such interaction occurs. Above all practice common sense, “Don’t check crime prevention or personal safety at the border, definitely take it with you,” says Dhein.

This week, UW-Eau Claire suspended two student trips to Mexico, including spring break travel to Durango, due to safety concerns.
