Dry weather prompts fire concerns

Warnings of wildfires for parts of Wisconsin.

Dry conditions in northern and central Wisconsin have prompted the DNR to suspend burning permits in 18 counties. The agency’s Jim Bishop says there also urging people to use caution with cooking or camping fires, and when using machinery around vegetation. He says windy and dry weather can quickly spread those sparks, causing wildfires that could grow out of control. [Read more...]

Truth in rebates

Wisconsin retailers would have to charge consumers the advertised price of a product, under legislation being proposed at the Capitol.

The bill from state Senator John Lehman (D-Racine) would ban retailers from advertising a low price for an item if it’s only available through a mail-in rebate. The Racine Democrat says consumers shouldn’t enter a store thinking they’re going to pay $50, and then end up paying $100 and filling out a form for the discount. [Read more...]

Pointers are preseason baseball favorites in WIAC

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has been picked to win the 2010 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) baseball championship in a vote of the league’s Sports Information Directors.

Stevens Point claimed a share of last year’s title with UW-Oshkosh and UW-Whitewater.  The Pointers have won five straight WIAC tournament crowns and have won 25 or more games each of the past 13 seasons.

This year’s roster boasts eight returning starting position players, including senior Jeremy Richter, who claimed the 2009 WIAC Position Player of the Year plaque.  Head coach Pat Bloom is currently one win away from his 200th career victory.

UW-Whitewater is projected to finish second and UW-Oshkosh third.

Letting retired cops pack heat

Retired law enforcement officers still can’t legally carry concealed weapons in Wisconsin. State Representative Ann Hraychuck, a former Polk County Sheriff, said “it’s a crying shame” that retired officers in Wisconsin can’t legally carry concealed. “I know of an individual that was convicted of felony child abuse on a case that I investigated, and he said he was going to kill me when he gets out of prison,” Hraychuck said. “He’s now out of prison and I can no longer legally carry a concealed firearm to protect myself from him.” [Read more...]

Maple syrup deep rooted in Wisconsin tradition

Maple trees around Wisconsin are now being tapped a tradition going back to the Indians. Native American culture enthusiast Sue Kenney says families would bury food caches in the ground in the fall near the maple trees, so when spring  arrived, they could more easily set up camp to harvest the trees.
