Just as the country revisits the issue of nuclear power, three middle school students from Racine have won C-SPAN’s 2010 student cam documentary contest with an entry called “Got the Power,” about the need for future clean energy and the future of nuclear power plants.
Thirteen-year-old Madison Richards says idea came from her uncle working at a nuclear power plant along with her teammates, 14-year-old Lauren Nixon and 14-year-old Samantha Knoll being interested in the subject. Nixon says she came away with a much better understanding about nuclear power with the project.

Meredith Rapp, C-SPAN’s Education Program Specialist, says the Racine middle schoolers beat out more than a thousand entries, including high school students nationwide, for the grand prize.

The Racine students, who won the middle school division last year with a fresh water documentary, will split this year’s $5,000 grand prize. Plus their school will receive $1,000 to purchase video equipment.
