Groups address Stewardship dispute

Conservation and hunting organizations have agreed on clarifications to the rules governing public access to state Stewardship lands. Reauthorization of the Stewardship Fund has been a political issue as some lawmakers charged an attempt to exclude hunters and anglers. Michael Strigel with Gathering Waters Conservancy says that’s never been the case. “Depending on how you count it . . . anywhere between and eighty and upwards of ninety five percent of Stewardship lands are open for hunting, fishing and trapping,” says Strigel. Texting ban may still pass

A state Senate Committee this week deadlocked on a bill to ban texting while driving, but the issue could still advance to the Senate floor. De Pere Republican, Senator Alan Lasee hopes so. “It’s a dangerous, dangerous practice,” says Lasee. “People have died.” Lasee is the author of a bill to prohibit the practice. The state Senate Transportation Committee deadlocked on a tie vote this week on a texting ban approved by the Assembly earlier this year. But panel Chairman, Senator Jim Holperin, will let the bill advance, anyway.
