Brewers drop season opener

The Milwaukee Brewers had the roof open at Miller Park in a home opener for the first time ever.  It didn’t do them any good though.  Colorado got out in front early and never surrendered the lead, knocking off the Brewers 5-3 on Monday afternoon.

A good debut for Brewers centerfielder Carlos Gomez, acquired during an off season trade with the Twins for shortstop JJ Hardy.  Gomez had four hits, including a 7th inning solo home run, the only home run for the Brewers on the day.  Gomez was only a triple short of hitting for the cycle. Wisconsin’s drinking culture is focus this month (AUDIO)

AlcoholabusePutting a human face on the dangers of drinking in Wisconsin meant a difficult morning for Elizabeth and David Meyers. At a Madison press conference to mark Alcohol Awareness Month, Elizabeth recalled the August 2008 crash which killed the couple’s 22 year-old son Daniel. The driver lost control of the car at 90 miles an hour. The car slid into a tree and David, a UW grad with dreams of concert pianist, was killed along with everyone else in the vehicle.

State Bar makes plea for D.A. funding

The State Bar of Wisconsin has renewed its call for adequate state funding and staffing of District Attorney offices. Mike Kernats, the President of the Bar’s Government Lawyers Division, says county prosecutors have been inadequately paid and supported by the state. “What’s happened lately is there have been proposals to lay these prosectors off, put them on furloughs, and in addition for the last few years a lot of the prosecutors have voluntarily chosen to leave prosecution to go to other lines of work,” says Kernats. “Their salaries are low, they’re not able to meet their expenses.” [Read more...]

UW-schools want more cap and gowns

University of Wisconsin schools want to bump the number of graduates. By the year 2025, the UW-schools want to confer nearly 33,700 undergraduate degrees per year, up from the current 26,000 per year.

Nuggets reportedly set to hire Brian Butch

Brian ButchThe Denver Nuggets are looking for depth and are reportedly dipping into the D-League for some front court depth.

According to ESPN.com, the Nuggets have reached an agreement to sign former Wisconsin Badger Brian Butch of the Bakersfield Jam to a contract for the remainder of the season.

The Nuggets lost Chris Anderson to an ankle sprain and are without big man Kenyon Martin, who is sidelined with a potential season ending knee injury.  Martin is still hoping to make it back for the playoffs.

The 6’11 Butch is averaging nearly 19 points and 12 rebounds a game for Bakersfield.
