A push for Healthy Choices

A U.S. Congressman from Wisconsin plans to introduce legislation to fight obesity.

In a statewide videoconference from the UW-Eau Claire Tuesday, Congressman Ron Kind (D-WI) announced the “Healthy Choices Act,” which he plans to introduce after the Easter break. The La Crosse Democrat says the obesity epidemic is a national health crisis, with nearly $147 billion being spent each year to treat illnesses related to weight problems. [Read more...]

The Wisconsin Department of Commerce is encountering resistance from the organization representing the state’s hospitality industry, as it drafts rules to implement the state’s new indoor smoking ban. “Many have invested thousands, and in come cases tens of thousands of dollars, in outdoor areas permitted under the statute, where smokers are going to be permitted to smoke,” said Scott Stenger, lobbyist for the Tavern League of Wisconsin. “This rule could jeopardize much of that investment.” [Read more...]

Snow may return

A couple of rounds of thunderstorms overnight and into this morning brought hail into Central and Southern Wisconsin. This included moderate hail in Green and Lafayette counties, while the counties of Rock, Walworth, Racine and Kenosha saw pea-sized hail, according to WDJT Meteorologist Chris McGinness. There is a chance of more storms this afternoon and into the overnight.

The cost of clean energy

The biggest roadblock to the clean energy bill is the cost of implementing it, especially during a bad economy.

A new report from Wisconsin Environment shows the Badger State has the potential to produce a lot of energy from the sun, but is solar cost-competitive?

“The good news is that the price of solar panels have plummeted over recent years, falling 20% in 2009 alone.”

The group’s State Director Dan Kohler says if solar panels are installed on homes and businesses across the state, that would power roughly 2/3 of the state’s homes. Still, there’s the significant up-front cost. [Read more...]

Bogut undergoes surgery

Milwaukee Bucks General Manager John Hammond announced that center Andrew Bogut had successful surgery on his right hand yesterday, repairing damage incurred during his fall in the second quarter of Saturday night’s game with Phoenix. 

Bogut is expected to need up to six weeks to fully recover from surgery before ne can fully engage in rehab.

Bogut appeared in 69 games this season, averaging career-highs in points (15.9) and blocks (2.5) while also recording 10.2 rebounds and shooting 52% from the field.  He is second in the league in blocks, 10th in rebounding, 17th in field goal percentage and his 37 double-doubles ranks 8th in the NBA.
