Governor doubtful about sex ed prosecutions

The Governor is skeptical about a warning to schools that teaching about contraceptives could result in prosecution.  The Juneau County District Attorney sent a letter to several school districts this week, warning them that following new sex education guidelines could lead to criminal charges for encouraging illegal sexual activity.

The standards signed into law earlier this year by Governor Jim Doyle require sex ed courses to also include information about contraceptives, which the D.A. contends could encourage minors to have sex. [Read more...]

Prison for man accused of tying up toddler

A Racine man will serve seven years in prison and then eight years of supervised release for his role in the 2008 death of his girlfriend’s two-year-old son.

28-year-old Jessie Rodriquez pleaded guilty to a lesser felony charge of child neglect resulting in death. The criminal complaint says the boy was tied to his bed with a blanket to keep him from leaving and to go to sleep, but suffocated because it was too tight. [Read more...]

Voucher kids on par with public school peers

Milwaukee’s so-called voucher students, who are given tax dollars to go to private schools, are performing at roughly the same levels in math and reading as their public school peers. That is the finding of an analysis that has concluded its third year in a five year longitudinal study on the Parental Choice Program.

Central Wisconsin vets in D.C.

A second Old Glory Honor Flight from Central Wisconsin left Outagamie County Regional Airport for Washington D.C. this morning. Waupaca County Veteran’s Service Officer Jon Lidonne is with the group of veterans. “As the fundraising chair, I can tell you it’s definately a challenge,” says Lidonne. “It’s a worthwhile effort, though. It takes us about $70,000 to make one of these flights happen.” [Read more...]

Appeals Court upholds homicide dismissal

The Wisconsin Court of Appeals has decided to uphold the dismissal of a homicide charge against a Minneapolis firefighter accused of killing a Wisconsin man.

The court ruled that lost evidence in the case prevented Kyle Huggett from getting a fair trial in the 2008 shooting death of 29-year-old John Peach, which occurred in Burnett County. Investigators were unable to provide threatening voice mail messages left by the alleged victim, which the court said could have exonerated Huggett at trial. [Read more...]
