Green Bay’s Makowski named USHL Defenseman of the Year

The United States Hockey League (USHL) named Green Bay Gamblers star David Makowski the league’s Defenseman of the Year as determined by a vote of the league coaches.

Makowski, who is committed to attend the University of Denver in the fall, led all USHL defensemen with 18 goals during the 2009-10 regular season while ranking tied for second with 41 points (18g, 23a) in 52 games.  Three times this season he has garnered USHL honors as the CCM Defensive Player of the Week.

The Wildwood, Missouri native has spent two seasons in the USHl with the Green Bay Gamblers.  Over 103 total games in the League, he has collected 70 points (27g, 43a) and registered a plus-45 rating.

St. Mary Central’s Jakubek steps down

St. Mary Central High School head boys basketball coach Brian Jakubek is stepping down after 14 seasons, the last two as the head coach of the Zephyrs.

Jakubek led the Zephyrs to the WIAA Division 4 State Tournament, the schools first appearance in the State Tournament.

Brewers and Cubs resume today

After an off day on Tuesday, the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs resume their 3-game series at Wrigley Field this afternoon (1:20PM CT).  Dave Bush (0-0 4.76 ERA) gets the start for the Brewers.  Randy Wells (1-0 0.00) gets the start for the Cubs.

Bush allowed four hits, two walks and three runs in 5 2/3 innings against St. Louis in his first start, striking out six.  Bush is 2-8 lifetime against the Cubs with a 5.13 ERA. 

Wells tossed six shutout innings in a win over Atlanta last week.  He went 1-1 against the Cubs with a 3.60 ERA in his rookie season last year. 

The Cubs won the series opener 9-5 on Monday, clubbing three home runs off of left Doug Davis.

Midwest Airlines name will depart soon

“The Best Care In the Air” remains, despite the new name for Midwest Airlines. That from Republic Airways CEO Bryan Bedford on the decision to rebrand Milwaukee’s hometown airline with co-owned Frontier Airlines. He says parts of the Midwest Airlines experience will be a part of the new Frontier Airlines, including a chocolate chip cookie for all passengers.

Changes proposed to clean energy bill

Supporters of the Clean Energy Jobs Act say they’ve reached a compromise on the measure, which could help to approve the bill before the Legislature adjourns next week.

Democrats on Tuesday introduced an amendment to the bill, which would remove several controversial provisions. Items removed include tougher vehicle emission requirements and lower carbon fuel standards. Another change would allow businesses to offset renewable power requirements by taking steps to conserve energy. [Read more...]
