Green Bay’s Anders Lee is USHL’s top rookie

Green Bay Gamblers first-year forward Anders Lee has been named USHL Rookie of the Year as determined by a vote of League coaches. 

The 19 year old Lee led the Gamblers in scoring with 66 points (35g, 31a) while playing in all but one of the 60 games for the team as Green Bay captured its second consecutive Anderson Cup.  The Anderson Cup is awarded annually to the USHL Member Club earning the greatest number of points during the regular season.

Nine of Lee’s goals were game-winners, the most by a player in the USHL since the 2005-06 season.  He ranked second overall in the USHL with a plus-38 rating.

The Edina, Minnesota native was a sixth-round selection (152nd overall) of the New York Islanders in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.  He is committed to play collegiate hockey at the University of Notre Dame next season.

Wisconsin’s Watt named to Lott Trophy Watch List

JJ WattWisconsin Badger junior defensive end J.J. Watt has been named to the 2010 Lott Trophy Watch List.  Watt is one of 42 candidates for the award which is given to the defensive player that best exhibits the same characteristics that Lott embodied during his playing career: integrity, maturity, performance, academics, community and tenacity.

In his first season on the field with the Badgers last season, Watt was named honorable mention All-Big Ten by the media and was an Academic All-Big Ten selection.  Watt finished second on the team with 15.5 tackles for loss, five pass breakup sand two fumble recoveries.  Watt also finished third on the squad with 4.5 sacks.

Assembly approves restrictions on 911 tapes

Audio from 911 calls could no longer be heard on the air, under legislation approved in the state Assembly Thursday night.

The bill from State Representative Amy Sue Vruwink (D-Milladore) would ban the release of audio from 911 calls to the public and the media. She says people shouldn’t have to worry about the tragedy they’re reporting when making a call being played over and over again by TV and radio. [Read more...]

Brewers salvage series finale with Cubs

Jeff Suppan made his 2010 debut with the Milwaukee Brewers.  Suppan wasn’t perfect, but he held his team in the game, working 5 innings and allowing 4 runs on 6 hits with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.  The Brewers went on to beat the Cubs 8-6, salvaging the final game of the series.

Suppan said it was definitely good to get that first start out of the way.  He said his job is to keep the game close.

Suppan did give up two of the Cubs three home runs.  Derek Lee hit a solo shot and Marlon Byrd clubbed a 2-run homer.

Ryan Braun and Casey McGehee each homered and drove in three runs for the Brewers. 

The Brewers improved to 4-5 with the win.  They’ll continue their road trip at Washington against the Nationals tonight.

Green Bay promotes Wardle from within

Brian WardleThe University of Wisconsin-Green Bay has made it’s decision.  They’ve hired 30-year old Brian Wardle to become the 6th head coach in men’s basketball history at the school, making him the youngest active coach in division 1 college basketball. 

Wardle has been an assistant with the Phoenix for the past five seasons and played college basketball at Marquette prior to that.  He takes over in Green Bay after Tod Kowalczyk left to take the head job at Toledo after 8 seasons as head coach of the Phoenix. [Read more...]
