Teacher faces heroin charges

A shake up for a small Rock County school. Katherine Mielke, a Spanish teacher at Brodhead Middle School for over five years, was arrested Monday. According to a deputy’s report, Mielke was in possession of drugs, including heroin.

The 31 year-old Mielke is on suspension from her job, pending an investigation. She had been under investigation for the past several weeks by Rock County’s Special Investigation Unit. [Read more...]

Businesses divided on Clean Energy Jobs Act

As the Assembly prepares to vote on the Clean Energy Jobs Acts (AB 649), an alliance gathered at the capitol to support the bill. Thad Nation of CREWE, a coalition made up of utilities and companies such as Johnson Controls and MillerCoors, says as Wisconsin’s economy continues to grow the bill will take the state to “the next level.”

Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce (WMC), the state’s largest business lobby, opposes the legislation saying it will cause utility rates to go up.  But State Representative Spencer Black (D-Madison), an architect of the bill, says independent data from the Public Service Commission data indicate a $1.6 billion a year savings for electric users. Stranded Madison mayor keeping in touch through technology

Madison’s mayor and the Dane County executive were in Europe to tour bicycle-friendly cities in Germany and the Netherlands. Now the ash cloud from Iceland has them stuck, along with millions of other travelers. From Amsterdam, Mayor Dave Cieslewicz says he and Kathleen Falk hope to fly out Wednesday. “We don’t know whether that’s going to happen yet, or not,” the Mayor says. “It seems like things are loosening up a little bit, and some flights from southern Europe are getting out. So we’re hopeful that we’re going to be able to leave on Wednesday, but it’s really day to day. [Read more...]

Kyles to miss time with prostate cancer

The Milwaukee Brewers say bullpen coach Stan Kyles has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and will leave the team to have surgery.  Kyles is expected to miss between 4 and 6 weeks.

Kyles will be replaced on an interim basis by Fred Dabney, who is the pitching coach of the Brewers Class A affiliate Brevard County.

Kyles was diagnosed during the team’s mandatory physical examinations at the start of spring training. 

Kyles is in his second season as the Brewers bullpen coach. [Read more...]
