Classy Senate farewell from Lasee (AUDIO)

As the Wisconsin legislature’s session winds down, so does the legislative career of a veteran lawmaker. DePere Republican, state Senator Alan Lasee, has served 36 years in the Wisconsin legislature, and has represented his northeastern Wisconsin district in the Senate since winning a special election in 1977.

Lasee is not seeking reelection this fall, and bid farewell to his colleagues on Tuesday. “Every one of you I can look in the eye and call a friend, and that’s really important,” said Lasee. Risser also paid tribute to Madison Democrat Fred Risser, who serves as Senate President, a post Lasee held earlier when Republicans were in control of the Senate. [Read more...]

Van Hollen says crime labs have closed DNA backlog (AUDIO)

Keeping a promise he made in his 2006 election campaign, Wisconsin’s attorney general announces today that the state Department of Justice has eliminated a backlog in processing DNA evidence at the state’s crime labs.

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen delivered a letter to Governor Doyle and the Wisconsin Legislature today informing them that there is no longer a backlog of DNA cases at the Wisconsin State Crime Laboratories, even as the number of DNA samples submitted has increased. “Before I took office the agency was working fewer than 100 DNA cases per month, with submissions of about 185 per month, so obviously the backlog was getting worse every month,” Van Hollen said. “We’re now getting submissions of about 500 per month, and we’re working over 500 cases per month.” [Read more...]

Inaugural meeting for puppy mill panel

A series of meetings kick off today to work out details of the puppy mill ban. A panel of 12 advisors to DATCP is gathering to work on the new law which requires dog breeders, retailers, shelters and pounds that sell or transfer at least 25 dogs a year to be licensed. Breeders are exempt if they sell dogs from three or fewer litters in a year.

Wisconsin environmental policy “underperforming”

Mixed marks for the Badger State from an environmental leader on the eve of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Steve Hiniker of 1000 Friends of Wisconsin says the Governor and the Legislature have made accomplishments in the past year on transportation and clean energy issues but they need to do more.

Bucks fall in 0-2 hole to the Hawks

The Milwaukee Bucks continued to look like a team missing one of its best players.  Without Andrew Bogut, the Bucks fell to the Atlanta Hawks 96-86 and now trail the Hawks 0-2 in the opening round of the NBA playoffs.

Joe Johnson scored 27 points and Josh Smith had 21 points, 14 rebounds and 9 assists to lead the Hawks.

John Salmons had 21 points but is now 0 for 10 in the series from behind 3-point range.  Jerry Stackhouse added 15 points and Ersan Ilyasovahad 13 points and 15 rebounds for the Bucks.   Bucks coach Scott Skiles said his team clearly lacks playoff experience.
