Packers trade up in 3rd round, pick safety

The Green Bay Packers are done on day two after trading up in the 3rd round to select Georgia Tech safety Morgan Burnett.

Like Bryan Bulaga in the first round, Burnett is a junior coming out early and will compete for the starting job with Atari Bigby.

Burnett is described as a ball-hawk, ranking among team leaders in tackles each of his three seasons at Georgia Tech.  The Tech record books show only seven other defensive backs in the history of the program registering more than his 235 career tackles, which was just 38 off the pace of the Yellow Jackets’ position record. Packers select Purdue DT Mike Neal

With the second round pick, the Green Bay Packers select DT Mike Neal from Purdue. 

Neal moved into Purdue’s starting lineup two years ago.  Since taking over at LDT, Neal registered 11 of his 13 career QB sacks and 21.5 of the 26 tackles behind the line of scrimmage that he recorded during his Boilermaker playing days.  [Read more...]

NFL Draft halfway through second round

The Green Bay Packers are up in six picks in the second round on day 2 of the NFL Draft.

Some of the bigger names that have gone in front of the Packers in the second round are OT Roger Saffold from Indiana to St. Louis.  The Vikings, with the second pick in the round, selected Virginia CB Chris Cook.  Oakland, with the 7th pick in the second round, selected Illinois WR Arrelious Benn.  OLB/DE Sergio Kindle of Texas went to Denver with the 11th pick in the round.  Carolina with the 16th pick in the round, took Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen and USC safety Taylor Mays went one pick later to San Francisco.  The Vikings stepped back up with the 50th pick and selected RB Toby Gerhart from Stanford.

The Packers will make their 2nd round pick shortly.

Doyle won’t call lawmakers back for clean energy bill

Session ends without passage of the Clean Energy Jobs Act.

Governor Jim Doyle is not happy about it, but not discouraged, either. Doyle says he doesn’t plan on calling the legislature back for a special session to take up his top priority on clean energy. “Obviously I would love to see the Clean Energy Jobs Act pass, and if there was a realistic possibility that calling them in would get that passed, then I would be very interested in doing it.” [Read more...]

Senator Robson bids farewell

Robson says good-bye on the last day of session…

Following the passage of patient neglect legislation (SB-657), retiring State Senator Judy Robson noted its importance to nurses, such as herself. Robson took the opportunity to bid farewell to her colleagues. The Democrat from Beloit was first elected to the Assembly in 1987. “I’ve always believed that public service is a very high calling, because it’s such an honor to serve in the state senate.” [Read more...]
