Washington being blamed for AZ immigration law

The new law in Arizona that cracks down on undocumented persons has groups on both sides of debate blaming the federal government. Dave Gorak of the Midwest Coalition to Reduce Immigration says if the federal government were doing its job with enforcement, including deportation, there wouldn’t be a need to pass such laws at the state level.

Starting May 7th Fire Departments across Fond du Lac County will be participating in the Red Shirt Friday program. It’s a nationwide program that shows support for U.S. troops. The Fond du Lac County Fire Chiefs Association has given it a bit of a different twist, with money raised from the sale of the shirts going to the Josh Wege Fund. Wege is a Campbellsport area native who lost his lower legs after a roadside explosion in Afghanistan. North Fond du Lac Fire Chief Paul Nelson says the chiefs from around the county voted unanimously to support Wege through the fundraising. [Read more...]

Dog survives arrow in chest

A dog was reunited with his owner in western Wisconsin on Thursday, two days after being left for dead with a hunting arrow in the chest. Dr. John Swingle says it’s a miracle that the arrow he removed from Buster the Boxer didn’t hit any vital organs. The dog faces a long recovery as the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department searches for a suspect. [Read more...]

Governor signs BadgerCare Basic legislation

043010bcplusWisconsin residents on the waiting list for BadgerCare Plus will have access to a temporary health insurance program, under legislation signed into law by the Governor Friday.

The bill authorizes the creation of a BadgerCare Plus Basic program, which is designed to provide coverage for the 43,000 Wisconsinites on the waiting list for the more comprehensive BadgerCare Core program. Governor Jim Doyle says it’s not a “Cadillac plan,” but it will provide a basic level of coverage that’s “better than having nothing.” [Read more...]

Strong response for online donor registry

Since going up about a month ago, the state’s new online registry for organ, tissue, and eye donors has proven quite popular. Kathy Schultz with Donate Life Wisconsin, which helps operate the registry, says over 10,000 people have already signed up.

Schultz says they anticipated a strong response, based on a long history of Wisconsinites signing up to be organ donors. Still, she says it’s great to see the list growing so quickly already. [Read more...]
