Madison’s Mayor is weighing on a proposed goose kill. “We need to explore all the options, but safety is paramount,” says Mayor Dave Cieslewicz about plans to kill up to 100 Canada Geese at Madison’s Warner Park. He emphasizes that the big birds are a potential hazard to planes at the nearby Dane County Regional Airport.
“This is an order coming down from the Federal Aviation Administration (the agency has a bird strike site) through the Dane County airport,” explains Cieslewicz. “What’s at stake here is the safety of passengers on planes, where a goose could get caught in a jet engine. That would be a very serious incident as we saw in the Miricle on the Hudson.”
The Parks Department has plans to kill up to 100 geese in June, and that’s been met with honks of opposition from a gaggle of animal-rights activists. Cieslewicz wants to see other options explored, but also says the geese may “need to go.”
