Educators learn about kids’ safety in the tech age

Educators and school resource officers are gathering in Milwaukee today for a conference aimed at keeping kids safe in the online age. One of the presenters, Justin Patchin of the Cyberbullying Research Center, says data suggests twenty-to-thirty percent of teens have experienced some form of online bullying whether it is name calling or a type of disrespect.

Patchin suggests adults have communication with adults to address these problems before they escalate such as the case of the Phoebe Prince, a 15-year-old who committed suicide reportedly because of bullying. In doing so he advocates “creative” ways to deal with the problem rather than extreme methods such as expulsion. With students wary of reporting incidents for fear of retribution, the UW-Eau Claire professor cites how some schools have set up anonymous reporting systems so victims can report their experience.

Other sessions will cover signs of abuse and a study of the New Berlin Sexting Case.

The conference is sponsored by the US and Wisconsin Departments of Justice and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

Brewers skunked by the Cubs at Miller Park

Nobody expected the Milwaukee Brewers to roll over the Chicago Cubs like they did the Pirates in a 3-game series last week.  But coming off a 3-game sweep of Pittsburgh and outscoring the Pirates 36-1, the Brewers were on a roll.

Unfortunately, the Brewers starting pitching continued to struggle and they ran into some pretty good pitching by Cubs and were swept in a 3-game series at Wrigley Field.  Chicago outscored the Brewers in the series 25-4 and finished it off with a 12-2 win at Miller Park yesterday. [Read more...]

Bucks GM named NBA Executive of the Year

John HammondMilwaukee Bucks General Manager John Hammond has been named the 2009-10 NBA Executive of the Year.

The Bucks totaled 46 wins in 2009-10, a 12-game improvement from last season, and earned the franchise’s first playoff berth since 2005-06.  Hammond’s decision to select Brandon Jennings with the 10th overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft paid immediate dividends for the Bucks.  Jennings won a starting spot in training camp and went on to average 15.5 points during his rookie season.

Hammond also named Scott Skiles the Bucks head coach when he took over, and Skiles’ trademark commitment to defense rubbed off.  In two years, the Bucks have gone from allowing 103.9 ppg in 2007-08 (23rd) to 96.0 ppg in 2009-10 (7th).

Hammond said this was a good year, but they want to continue to improve.  He said his winning the Executive of the Year award is about the year Scott Skiles and the players had.
