Gamblers Cooper is honored by USHL

Jon CooperGreen Bay Gamblers coach Jon Cooper has been named the United States Hockey League (USHL) Coach and General Manager of the Year.

Cooper led the Gamblers to a second straight Anderson Cup title for the league’s best regular season record (45-10-5).  Since Cooper took over in Green Bay to start the 2008-09 season, the Gamblers have put together a 84-27-9 regular season record and a 10-4 playoff mark.

The Gamblers open the best-of-5 2010 Clark Cup Championship series against Fargo on Friday night at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

Mayor optimistic school reforms will help MPS

Before adjourning last week, the Legislature passed a bill granting new powers to the State Superintendent of Public Instruction to intervene in failing school districts. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett says the legislation, which Governor Doyle is expected to sign, is a step in the right direction when it comes to addressing the problems in MPS. [Read more...]

The high cost of prisons

Wisconsin has a lot more people behind bars than our neighbors to the west, even though the populations of both states are similar.

A new study by the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance shows about 23,000 people are behind bars in the Badger State, compared to about 9,000 in Minnesota. [Read more...]

Barrett will face attacker in court

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett says he plans to speak at the sentencing of the 21-year-old man who attacked him last summer at State Fair Park.

Anthony J. Peters entered a guilty plea on Tuesday to charges of first-degree reckless injury, disorderly conduct, and bail jumping. He was arrested last August, after Mayor Barrett tried to intervene in a fight between Peters and the grandmother of his child in a parking lot outside of the State Fair. [Read more...]

Marquette University is hosting a national showcase aimed at preventing suicides. The “Send Silence Packing” display today features 11,000 backpacks representing those college students who took their own life, 75 of the packs contain profiles of the victims.
