Badgers climb in Directors’ Cup standings

The University of Wisconsin ranks 9th in the final winter Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings.  The Badgers climbed 12 places after ranking 21st following the fall season.

UW currently has 607.5 total points, while top-ranked Stanford has earned 962.  Ohio State, Penn State, Florida and Minnesota round out the top five.

A total of eight teams earned points for Wisconsin in the winter season, led by the men’s hockey team’s national runner-up finish and wrestling’s fourth-place national finish.

The Big Ten Conference is the only conference with four teams ranked in the top nine. 

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.  Points are awarded based on each institutions finish in up to 20 sports – 10 women’s and 10 men’s.

Madison homicide investigation has Texas ties

Texas authorities are looking for the man Madison police say shot and killed rival gang member 19 year old Antonio Perez last week outside a Fordem Avenue business. The alleged gunman, 21 year old Ivan Lozenzo, was last seen going from Port Arthur, Texas, to Groves, about 95 miles east of Houston. Also last night, police and U.S. marshals in Indiana arrested a 15-year-old boy suspected of having a role in the murder. [Read more...]

Gallagher takes over at Manitowoc

Two Rivers resident and Mineral Point native Brian Gallagher has been named the new men’s basketball coach at Manitowoc Lincoln High School.

Gallagher has coached boys basketball at Green Bay Preble since 2005.  Prior to that, he was the head coach at Two Rivers from 2002 to 2004.

Gallagher replaces Mark Christenson, who led the Ships for the past 16 years.

Challenges to federal immigration reform

The state law in Arizona that cracks down on the undocumented has spurred louder calls for immigration reform at the federal level. However a UW-Madison political scientist doubts that will happen.
