The Doyle Depot? Madison will have a new high speed rail station downtown, and if the city’s Mayor has his way, it will be named after Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle. Doyle made the announcement Thursday that a site in the heart of downtown Madison has been selected over three others, including Dane County Regional Airport. The governor said a High-Speed Rail Station Feasibility Assessment indicated that the site on the Lake Monona side of Madison’s isthmus had higher projected ridership with costs roughly the same as other locations. And he noted that the city is already planning new parking. “And there is no doubt that what people wanted is to come to downtown Madison” Doyle said. [Read more...]

Debating a National Day of Prayer

050610ndp1Boosted by a recent federal court ruling that the practice of declaring a National Day of Prayer is unconstitutional, members of the Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation celebrated the victory on the state Capitol steps Thursday.

FFRF co-president Dan Barker says the people of this country do not “bow down and submit to a sovereign” or a “spook in the sky.” He called on around 100 supporters of efforts to outlaw the practice to continue the fight. [Read more...]

Basketball Badgers headed to Disney World

Coming off of their 12th straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, the Wisconsin men’s basketball team is headed for Disney World. 

The Badgers will be playing in the fifth-annual Old Spice Classic on Thanksgiving weekend.  The rest of the field includes 2009-10 NCAA Tournament teams California, Notre Dame, Temple and Texas A & M, as well as Boston College, Georgia and Manhattan.

The 2010 Old Spice Classic will feature 12 games through three days, Nov. 25, 26 and 28. 

Previous winners of the Old Spice Classic are Florida State (2009), Gonzaga (2008), North Carolina State (2007) and Arkansas in 2006.

This will be the fifth time in the last six seasons that Wisconsin will participate in a tropical non-conference tournament, the last of which coming in 2009 at the Maui Invitational

Bucks get mentions on NBA Defensive squad

No Milwaukee Bucks made the NBA‘s 1st or 2nd All-Defensive Team. 

The first team consists of Defensive Player of the Year Dwight Howard (Orlando), Boston Celtics guard Rajon Rondo, LA Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, Charlotte forward Gerald Wallace and Cleveland forward Lebron James.

The second team is made up of San Antonio big man Tim Duncan, Miami guard Dwyane Wade, Oklahoma City’s Thabo Sefolosha and forwards Josh Smith of Atlanta and Anderson Varejao of the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Bucks players Andrew Bogut, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute and Ersan Ilyasova received points.
