Honoring fallen officers

Despite a steady downpour, four names were added Friday to the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial on the Capitol grounds.

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen says the several hundred people in attendance for the rain-soaked ceremony reflects a strong commitment to those who have fallen in the line of duty. He said those who came out to honor those who gave up their lives speaks volumes about the importance of the occasion. [Read more...]

Snow expected in parts of state

Winter may have ended a month and a half ago but a little reminder is headed to Wisconsin. Scott Cultice with the National Weather Service in Green Bay says across far northern Wisconsin will be changing from rain to snow this afternoon into tonight.

As of Friday, the National Weather Service issued winter weather advisories for the Northwoods.

More safe rides for bar patrons

Governor Jim Doyle and the Tavern League don’t always get along, but they did Friday, in an effort to combat drunk driving in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Tavern League’s Safe-Ride program is getting additional money, under a law signed by Doyle. “We expect about a thirty percent increase in funding for our Safe Ride programs throughout the state,” said League lobbyist Scott Stenger. “It’s going to be a significant shot in the arm, one more tool to combat drunk driving.” [Read more...]

Marquette U. rescinds job offer to lesbian candidate

About 100 students held a protest demonstration last night at Marquette University in Milwaukee, after the Jesuit school withdrew an offer to hire a lesbian dean who had written academic works on gender and sexual orientation.

Energy rebate program out of funds

Focus on Energy is no longer accepting applications for the State Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program.

Because of the program’s popularity, federal cash-back rewards on high-efficiency appliances have simply been exhausted. That’s according to Bobbi Fey, Assistant Director of Residential Programs with Focus on Energy. “The about $5.4 million allocated to Wisconsin will have been spent in just over four months.”

Since the program began on January first, Fey estimates that about 45,000 customers have taken advantage of the incentives. [Read more...]
