Governor signs payday lending bill

Payday lenders operating in Wisconsin will face new regulations, under a bill signed into law by Governor Doyle on Tueday. Doyle also used his veto pen to make some changes to the measure, with a major revision being to completely ban auto title loans in Wisconsin.

The original bill passed by the Legislature last month limited auto title loans to 50-percent of the vehicle’s value. But Carrie Templeton, the Governor’s Legislative Director, says Doyle felt that aspect of the industry represented some of the most predatory lenders in the state. [Read more...]

Public has mixed feelings on new mosque

A town in Sheboygan County approves construction of a mosque, but not without controversy. The Wilson Town Board Monday night approved the conditional use permit clearing the way for a former retail store to be converted into a mosque.  The 25 people that spoke out during public input were fairly evenly split for and against the proposal.

Raw milk users, producers urge passage (VIDEO, AUDIO)

Farmers and consumers of raw milk are urging Governor Jim Doyle to legalize it. With time running out on a decision from the governor, they rallied on the State Street steps of the Capitol, urging Doyle to sign the bill (SB 434) allowing on farm sales of unpasteurized milk. Otherwise, warned Stoughton area farmer Scott Trautman. “It’s going to be on the governor’s conscience. Thousands more dairy farms, the best dairy farms, the farming legacy, multi-generational farmers (will be) gone forever.”

Whitewater hosts NCAA Div. III Regional

UW-Whitewater is hosting one of the eight NCAA Division III baseball regionals around the country starting Wednesday.  The Warhawks (38-5) is the #1 seed in the six-team, double-elimination regional. 

The Warhawks are joined in the regional field by second seeded and defending national champion St. Thomas (33-7) of St. Paul, Minnesota. [Read more...]

Hughes gets predraft workout with Bucks

Former Wisconsin Badger Trevon Hughes was one of 12 players to go through pre-draft workouts with the Milwaukee Bucks at the teams training center.   Hughes was one of six players in the morning session and he thinks things went well.

Bucks assistant General Manager Jeff Weltman said he was happy to get a look at Hughes.

The Bucks will continue to bring in players up to the June 24th draft.  Following the draft, the Bucks will hold a mini-camp to put together a team to compete in the Las Vegas summer league.
