DOJ remembers missing kids, adults

The Wisconsin Department of Justice honors the families of Wisconsin’s missing children and adults.

At a ceremony at the State Capitol (Wednesday) — the 28th such event — Attorney General JB Van Hollen says it’s important to continue with future ceremonies so as to never forget those who are missing, and to prevent more people from going missing.

Governor vetoes raw milk

Citing concerns about the dangers to public health and potential damage it could do to the dairy industry, Governor Jim Doyle on Wednesday vetoed a bill that would have allowed dairy farmers to sell raw milk.

The legislation legalizing the sale of unpasteurized dairy products has been the subject of a great deal of controversy in recent weeks, after the Governor Doyle appeared to be wavering in his initial support of the bill. [Read more...]

Madison approves controversial hotel project

After an all night meeting, Madison’s City Council has approved the $98 million Edgewater Hotel redevelopment project.

Members of the Madison City Council spent the meeting debating a proposed downtown hotel redevelopment, before taking a final vote on the Edgewater redevelopment at 7:40 this morning. The last vote was for $16 million in TIF funding for the historic hotel. [Read more...]

Weights and Measures seeks fee increases

Weights and Measures fees for businesses across the state could soon increase.

The most recent (2009-2011) state budget gives the Consumer Protection Department* the authority through the administrative rule process to increase fees for weights and measures inspections. Opponents insist the hikes are too high. Janet Jenkins says her agency simply wants to cover its costs; that’s all. “I can honestly say to you that these (fees) were based upon the calculations of what it cost to test a device, and again remind you that so many of these haven’t been changed in 13 years.” [Read more...]

Offender’s latest charge could mean life in prison

A registered sex offender is accused of having sexual contact with a young girl outside of a Grand Chute motel. 45-year-old Jeffrey Walker faces four counts of first-degree sexual assault of a child and four counts of child enticement for separate incidents Sunday involving a six-year-old girl.
