Brewers’ Gomez starts rehab today

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez, the teams opening day centerfielder, will be in uniform today and tomorrow for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

Gomez was placed on the disabled list with a strained rotator cuff in his left shoulder and a strained left knee.  He’ll play the next two days with the Brewers single-A affiliate and could join the Brewers in time for the start of their weekend series with the Minnesota Twins.

Wisconsin beat Peoria 14-1 last night, allowing the Chiefs just one base hit.

Badger women’s hoops searching for new assistant

Kathi Bennett

Kathi Bennett

Wisconsin Badger women’s basketball coach Lisa Stone is looking for a new top assistant coach today.  Kathi Bennett was named the new head coach at Northern Illinois on Tuesday.

Bennett is credited with bolstering the Badgers defense in her two seasons at the UW.  Wisconsin finished second in the Big Ten Conference in scoring defense two years ago and they topped the Big Ten in that category last season.

Edmonds to the DL

The Milwaukee Brewers recalled RHP Marco Estrada from Triple (A) Nashville, and placed outfielder Jim Edmonds on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique.

Estrada pitched 4-innings in yesterday’s 5-4 Brewers loss to the Reds.  He was in line for his first major league win before Trevor Hoffman blew the save.

Brewers need to find new closer

Whether Trevor Hoffman agrees to step down as the Milwaukee Brewers closer or management forces that decision, one thing is certainly clear, it’s time the Brewers find somebody else to close out games.

Hoffman blew his 5th save in the Brewers 5-4 loss to the Reds on Tuesday afternoon, sending the Brewers to their season high 8th straight loss.

Hoffman entered in the 9th, asked to protect a 4-2 lead.  But Hoffman allowed all five batters he faced to reach base.  Hoffman fell to 1-3 with a 13.15 ERA.  His 5-blown saves is one more than all of last year.

Ryan Braun homered in the loss.  The Brewers open a 2-game series in Pittsburgh against the Pirates tonight.
