Heading out of the Republican Party of Wisconsin’s state convention this past weekend in Milwaukee, the focus is on Scott Walker. The Milwaukee County Executive won the endorsement of delegates at the convention with 91-percent of the vote.

Bellin Run

Bellin Run (WRN Photo)

One of the great 10k run events goes through my Green Bay area neighborhood every year.

This year is the 34th edition of the Bellin Run.  Proceeds from the event go towards nursing scholarships to the Bellin College of Nursing.

What a great event.  Organizers bring in some big names in the Elite Division.  Some are world class runners right now.  Others are some of the great runners of the past.  Bill Rodgers, Utah Pippig and Joan Benoit-Samuelson are among the running greats that will come to Green Bay for the Saturday, June 12th event. Black bear in Southern Wisconsin

A black bear popped up over the weekend in southern Wisconsin. “It’s pretty rare. I’ve never heard of this and have been working here for 23 years,” says Waunakee Police Chief Kevin Plendl. The bear was first spotted Saturday afternoon in a neighborhood and it stayed through the weekend.

“It sounds like it’s still in the area, a resident contacted us this morning and advised that the bear was in his yard at 10 o’clock last night. This was less than a mile of where it was originally spotted on Saturday,” says Plendl.

The bear hasn’t shown any aggression, so the advice given to Plendl from DNR experts is, just leave it alone, and hopefully it will find its way to where it came from.

Pointers headed back to Div. 3 College World Series

The University of Wisconsin Stevens Point (33-16) earned a 4-3 win over UW-Whitewater to advance to the schools 4th NCAA Division 3 College World Series and 4th overall.  The Pointers will open the double elimination tournament Friday morning with a 10am start against SUNY Cortland of New York.

Stevens Point needed only one win on Saturday to win the Midwest Regional title, hosted by Whitewater.  The Warhawks stole the show in the opener, pulling out a 9-3 win, but the Pointers won the second game, 4-3, scoring the winning run in the final inning on a suicide squeeze bunt.

It’s the first trip to Fox Cities Stadium for the Pointers since the 2007 season.

It’s also the seventh time in the last eight seasons that the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) has sent a team to the finals of the Division III Baseball Championship.

Central Wisconsin drownings investigated

Authorities in Waupaca and Portage Counties are investigating two weekend drownings. Early Sunday morning, a 19-year-old Neenah man died in a man-made lake in Town of Waupaca. The man apparently tried to swim to shore from a raft but experienced difficulty and went under, according to Waupaca County Sheriff’s officials.
