Better buckle up

Police across Wisconsin are cracking down on drivers who don’t buckle up.

As the Memorial Day weekend approaches, police agencies have started their annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign. State Transportation Safety Director, Major Dan Lonsdorf, says over 375 agencies are participating this year and they’ll be out looking for drivers and passengers who aren’t wearing a seat belt. Elderly driver causes crash (AUDIO)

It could have been far worse. Police say an elderly woman failed to stop for an officer in downtown Madison Wednesday morning, instead speeding down a one-way street into a busy intersection, where she collided with a car. Both vehicles ended up on the sidewalk, where two pedestrians were injured.

Loretta Neely works near the busy intersection where the crash occurred. Neely confirmed that an MPD officer attempted to stop the elderly driver on Henry Street. “You could tell she was like disoriented or something . . . she wasn’t all there,” said Neely. “And then when she got to Mifflin and Henry, she sped off,” down Henry, which at that point becomes a one-way street. Neely’s co-worker Jesenya Alvarado said the driver “bolted straight down the one-way, and then we heard the crash.” [Read more...]

ESPN to televise Badger football home game vs. San Jose St

The Wisconsin football team’s Sept. 11 home game against San Jose State will kickoff at 11am (CT) and air live on ESPN. 

The Badgers and San Jose State have met just once prior to this season.  Wisconsin whipped up on the Spartans 56-10 in San Jose on Sept. 13, 1997, as Ron Dayne rushed for 254 yards and three touchdowns.

A tribute to Evel

Today marks the 35th anniversary of Evel Knieval’s famed Wembley Stadium jump in London where he attempted to jump 13 buses in front of 90,000 people. The motorcycle daredevil didn’t make the jump but as his oldest son recalls, Evel refused a stretcher and walked out despite a broken back. “Then he came back six months later and jumped further. That’s was just the kind of man he was,” says Kelly Knieval.

Schiavo Family Continues Battling

A family who took the national center stage in a battle to keep their disabled daughter alive continues to fight amongst each other. The end of March was the fifth anniversary of Terri Schindler Schiavo’s death. Her parents and her husband Michael fought over a feeding tube that was keeping her alive. Michael Schiavo won the battle and had it removed. [Read more...]
