What’s Memorial Day without cookouts? A registered dietician has some advice to ensure you don’t get sick from food not prepared or stored properly. Barbara Troy, Clinical Assistant Professor at Marquette University, says be careful with proteins especially raw meat. Although cured meats like sausages and hot dogs are generally considered to be a little more sustainable she says exercise caution there as well.

If you and your family are leaving town for Memorial Day, there are some things to keep in mind to keep your home safe. A police officer says first and foremost use your locks. Jason Weber with the Wisconsin Crime Prevention Practitioners Association (WCPPA) says so many burglaries to homes and cars occur when are they are simply unlocked.
Kicking off tourism season in the Dells
Wisconsin Dells attractions are hoping to kick off a “tremendous summer season” this holiday weekend

No Call deadline nears, online registration spikes
Deadline approaches for getting on Wisconsin’s No Call list.
If you want to avoid frequent calls from telemarketers, you have until the end of Monday to sign up to the latest No Call list.
Brock Bergey, spokesperson at the state Department of Consumer Protection, says nearly 37,500 new phone numbers were added to the list in just a few hours Thursday early afternoon, causing online registration to be temporarily unavailable. Bergey says the agency’s Internet service provider assures them that peak usage will diminish. So, if you were unable to register, simply try again. [Read more…]
Alvarez headed to College Hall of Fame
Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez, the winningest football coach in Badger football history, will be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Alvarez won 118 games in his 16 years on the Badger sidelines, including three Big Ten titles and three Rose Bowl Championships. Alvarez said he’s truly honored.

Alvarez is the 9th Badger to be elected to the College Football Hall of Fame and the first since Pat Richter joined the Hall in 1996.
Don’t ask, don’t tell gets more than dialogue
A US Senate panel has voted to repeal don’t ask, don’t tell. Also on Thursday the House backed an amendment to a defense bill that would also reverse the 17-year-old policy which bars gays from serving openly in the military. Katie Belanger, Executive Director of Fair Wisconsin, says DADT does not allow “patriotic gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender service people serve their country.”
A busy weekend for travel
It could get a little crowded on Wisconsin roadways this weekend.
An estimated 665,000 Wisconsinites are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home this weekend, according to AAA. Auto club spokesman Nick Jarmusz says that’s up about 7.8-percent from last year and higher than what’s expected in other parts of the country. [Read more…]
Wall drops out of Senate race
The list of Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate is shrinking again.
Madison-area developer Terrence Wall has dropped his bid for the U.S. Senate, less than a week after delegates at the state Republican Party convention endorsed Oshkosh businessman Ron Johnson and Dick Leinenkugel bowed out. [Read more…]
Group claims dogs are being nabbed
The head of an animal rights group is warning about an increase in the number of dogs being stolen from Midwest yards and farmsteads. Veterinarian Elliot Katz, president of the group In Defense of Animals, says there’s an “epidemic” of missing dogs. Dr. Katz says there was a similar spike in dog thefts in the region some 15 years ago. [Read more…]
Feingold, Ryan’s plan to reel in spending
This week President Obama joined a long list of predecessors calling for line item veto authority in effort to rein in spending. US Senator Russ Feingold has a proposal dubbed the “Janesville Line-Item Veto” because he introduced it with fellow Janesville native House Republican Paul Ryan.
