Brewers miss opportunities, fall to Marlins

The Milwaukee Brewers stranded 12 base runners last night, falling to the Florida Marlins 3-2 in Miami, dropping 3 of 4 in the series.

Josh Johnson extended his streak of innings without allowing an earned run to 31 before finally allowing one in the 7th inning. 

The loss spoiled the return of lefty Chris Capuano to the mound.  Capuano was making his first start since September of 2007 after a second Tommy John surgery.  Capuano went 3 2/3 innings, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits and he’s glad it’s over. [Read more...]

A Wausau man earns his high school diploma — 57 years late. Ted Ulrich graduated from Wausau East High School on Tuesday night. He was supposed to graduate in 1953 but quit school in the fall of his senior year to join the Marines and fight in the Korean War. Ulrich said he really wanted his diploma after all these years. “I did it for my mother and day, because it really bothered them that I quit high school and went into the service, because I was an only child,” Ulrich said. “I really did it for them.” [Read more...]

State Track & Field Championships open today

The 115th WIAA Boys and the 40th Girls Track and Field Championships open today at Veterans Memorial Stadium on the campus of UW-La Crosse.

Competition in 3 divisions starts this morning and will conclude with the final events on Saturday. 

The 2010 State Tournament will mark the first time events for wheelchair-bound student athletes are part of the meet.

only area for games at Lambeau Field.

Stadiums in Dallas, New England, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay already have such areas for their fans. 

Packers team president Mark Murphy told the Green Bay Press Gazette that a standing-room-only area is one of many ideas the team is considering as part of possible expansion of Lambeau Field and all plans are only in the discussion stages.

Thousands of students take their first step in getting familiar with the UW campus, and construction could be a burden.

The first summer SOAR session begins — Student Orientation, Advising and Registration. Basically, it’s the students’ introduction to their academic experience.

Wren Singer is director of the Center for the First-Year Experience, an arm of the Offices of the Dean of Students. She says extensive road and building construction on campus is presenting a few logistical challenges. “So, while it is complicated, I think it provides a realistic orientation to what they are going to expect as students here.” [Read more...]
