Suppan released by Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers finally released veteran right handed pitcher Jeff Suppan on Monday.

The Brewers felt their improved depth at pitcher allowed them to release Suppan, who has $8-million remaining on his $12.5 million salary for 2010.  The Brewers are also on the hook for a $2-million buyout of a club option for 2011, which means they must pay Suppan $10-million for the remainder of the season.

Suppan was relegated early in the season to a mop-up role after struggling in his only two starts at the beginning of the season.  He finished with an 0-2 record this season and a 7.84 ERA in 15-appearances.  His numbers easily support the decision, 31 innings pitched, 50 hits allowed, 12 walks and 27 earned runs with 18 strikeouts.  In Suppan’s overall time with the Brewers, he made 97 starts and went 29-36 with a 5.08 ERA.

Dirt trail leads to treenappers

Two UW-Madison students are paying hefty fines of about $700 apiece, for stealing a 20 foot maple tree from a downtown street. Police spokesman Joel DeSpain says it appears some late night hijinks were involved. “They were up into the wee hours of the morning on Saturday, and at some point . . . someone had a brainstorm of going out and taking this maple tree,” says DeSpain. The tree was yanked out of the ground and brought into an apartment.

It didn’t take police very long to find the thieves. “We’re used to following blood trails, but this turned out to be a dirt trail we followed right back to the apartment,” says DeSpain. Officers found the door wide open, the occupants asleep, “and what we call a clue sitting in the living room.” The two young men did try to save the tree by replanting it at its original location.

Tom Barrett says he has a track record of dealing with tough budgets, and that he’s “a Democrat who knows how to balance a checkbook.” The Milwaukee mayor and Democratic candidate for governor said he’ll put Madison on a diet and “right-size” state government, without resorting to the massive tax cuts proposed by Republican candidates. “We’re going to be requiring every department to have a top-to-bottom review, so that we can see what size we need to have,” Barrett said during a Monday press conference outside the state Capitol in Madison. “We’re also looking to do that in areas pertaining to sick leave . . . benefits, making sure that the benefits for state workers are in line with the private sector.” [Read more...]
