Warnings go out to schools

The Department of Public Instruction has identified 89 schools and two districts that are in need of improvement.

All of them missed adequate yearly progress targets for the second year in a row, which are set under the federal No Child Left Behind law. DPI spokesman Patrick Gasper says the reports are based on testing that was done this past November statewide. [Read more...]

Republican candidate for governor Mark Neumann has been asked to return a campaign contribution, but has indicated that’s not likely to happen. Neumann has been touting numbers which he says show his GOP opponent, Milwaukee County Exec Scott Walker, proposed spending at a higher rate than Democratic Governor Jim Doyle over the past eight years. Appeals court sides with papermaker

The former Appleton Papers has won a court decision in the battle over who has to pick up the tab for Fox River cleanup. A state appeals court has ruled that the insurance companies need to pay for the costs to remove or cap Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs). Attorney Ron Ragatz of Madison represented Appleton Papers, now know simply as Appleton, in the suit and said it upholds an earlier decision in Brown County court. “This decision confirms that the jury was right in 2008 when they gave us a verdict for coverage. This confirms that our trial judge was right when he entered a judgement on that verdict.” [Read more...]

Barnes named Badger women’s assistant

an assistant with the Wisconsin women’s basketball program.  Barnes served as head coach of the Huskies program for the past 7 seasons.

Barnes guided Michigan Tech to winning records in all seven seasons, compiling an overall record of 156-55 (.739).  The Huskies advanced to the NCAA Division II Tournament five times during his tenure, including Elite Eight appearances in 2009 and 2010.

Tech won three Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championships and two tournament titles under Barnes.  He earned GLIAC Coach of the Year accolades three times in his career, including each of the last two seasons.

Accused murderer takes his own life

An Eau Claire County man has taken his own life in jail rather than face a trial for the murder of his live-in girlfriend. 44-year-old Gregory Gubernot of Altoona was due to face trial beginning Monday, in the death of 43-year-old Theresa Still. He was charged with murdering Still on December 27th, then dumping her body more than 100 miles away in rural Adams County.
