An ugly primary for Wisconsin Republicans

A UW-Madison expert sees some problems, and possible advantages, in the GOP race for Governor.

The race has grown gotten increasingly nasty between former Congressman Mark Neumann and Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker. Political science professor Charles Franklin says that upsets what had seemed to be a clear cut path to the nomination for Walker, after he received the endorsement from the Republican Party at its state convention. FBI raids Wausau insurance office

An FBI raid at a Wausau Insurance office Thursday, as 25 agents searched the Manson Insurance offices.

Steve Anderson is president of River Valley Bank, which bought the insurance company last year. He says they’ve been working with the FBI since the middle of 2009 on an investigation focused on the company before they acquired it. [Read more...]

Missing mother in Dane County

36-year-old Keri Geschke was last seen around 8 on Tuesday morning, when she dropped her daughter off at school. Her husband Scott then reported her missing when he returned home from work that evening, and she was not there. [Read more...]

UW Regents OK tuition hike (AUDIO)

UW Regents have cleared a tuition hike for state universities. Prior to the vote regents heard the presentation breaking down the proposed $5.6 billion dollar annual operating budget. Regent and current student Aaron Wingad talked of how the UW system has to make up for shortfalls from state government. Although far from perfect, Wingad said the budget does “a reasonable job of spreading the burden…among students, faculty and programs alike.”

Feingold touts line item veto coalition

Senator Russ Feingold thinks a presidential line item veto may get done in this session of Congress. Feingold calls it the “Janesville line-item veto” after the hometown he shares with House Republican Paul Ryan. And Feingold expects this presidential veto pen could have a deterrent effect – with less pork being slipped into bills in the first place. “It’s one thing when you can kind of quietly slip the Lawrence Welk museum in North Dakota in at the last minute and people don’t really notice it. It’s another thing when a president can say ‘hey, who did this and why did they do it, and you guys are going to vote on this again.’ I think that will have a deterent effect as well as getting rid of some items specifically,” said Feingold.
