Walker wants state workers to cover pension costs

Wisconsin currently covers employer and employee pension fund contributions for many state workers. Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Walker says that costs the state $176 million a year, and it needs to stop.

Walker is pledging to end the practice, if he’s elected Governor. He says state workers should be covering their own portion of contributing to the state’s retirement fund. [Read more...]

Unemployment rate continues to drop

The state unemployment rate dropped half-a-percentage point last month.

Wisconsin’s unemployment rate dropped to 7.7-percent in May, which is its lowest level since early 2009 and down from 8.2-percent in April. [Read more...]

Homicide charge sought in teen’s death

Fitchburg police are seeking the most serious charge in the murder of a 16-year-old this week, “The Fitchburg Police Department has referred charges to the Dane County District Attorney’s office of First Degree Intentional Homicide and Robbery with Force. Lawmaker wants rural focus for Enterprise Zones

A state lawmaker wants to restore the rural focus to a state jobs program. State Representative Scott Suder, the Abbotsford Republican who was lead author of legislation that created the Enterprise Zone program in 2005, says something happened on the way to the bill becoming law. “Unfortunately Governor Doyle, when the bill made it through the legislature, he used his veto to take out the word rural,” said Suder, with the result that the first ten million dollars in the program was sent to urban areas. “He took that money and sent it to places like Madison and Milwaukee.” [Read more...]

Helping the veteran who survived the war survive the peace is the saying of the Wisconsin Warrior Project which wrapped up their two-day summit Wednesday in Madison. The project is an alliance of groups that help veterans return to civilian life and deal with post traumatic stress disorder. PTSD is an issue the keynote speaker, Kyle Hausmann-Stokes, knows firsthand.
