CDC, state hosts Lyme disease forum

During the first-of-its-kind public forum, CDC Bacterial Diseases Branch Chief Dr. Ben Beard said Mother Nature is partly to blame for the increase in Wisconsin, where cases have quadrupled over the last decade. “We think they (ticks) are spreading primarily through deer, deer populations are growing,” Beard said at the Wausau event Thursday.

Kelly, Stricker not alone with U.S Open Struggles

The first round of the 2010 U..S Open is in the books and just about everyone in the field is glad it is.  Of the 156-participants in the tournament at Pebble Beach this week, just nine shot under-par in the opening round.

Wisconsin’s duo of hope did not finish in that category.  Steve Stricker shot a 4-over 75 in his first round.  Jerry Kelly fared a little better with a 1-over 72 on day one. Both golfers will tee off in the morning flight today.

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickleson each went the entire first round without a single birdie on the scorecard.  Woods enters Friday’s second round 3-over par with Mickleson a shot behind.

There is a three-way tie on top of the leader board through day one.  Shaun Micheel, Paul Casey and Brandon de Jonge each fired 2-under par rounds of 70 Thursday.

Brewers head to Colorado

Every season when Interleague baseball is going on in the MLB, two national league teams get paired against each others.  It’s the Brewers turn for that as they are in Colorado to face the Rockies.  Milwaukee (28-38) took two of three from Colorado (34-32) to open up the season.

The Brewers catch a break by missing Colorado ace Ubaldo Jimenez’s spot in the rotation.  Jimenez is 13-1 on the season with a 1.15 ERA and the early favorite for the National League Cy Young Award.  The Rockies will go with Jason Hammel (4-3, 4.53) Friday, Jeff Francis (2-2, 3.29) Saturday and Aaron Cook (2-4, 5.15) Sunday.

Milwaukee is slated to throw Manny Parra (1-4, 4.04) Friday, Yovani Gallardo (6-3, 2.66) Saturday, and Randy Wolf (5-6, 5.08) Sunday. Start times:  Friday-8:10, Saturday-7:10,and  Sunday-2:10.
