Charity gets tax exempt status year after girl’s death

Emily Eaton died a year ago from the H1N1 flu but a charity formed in her honor will help her spirit live on.The IRS granted Emily’s Path tax exempt status, Eaton’s father Dale said this week. Eaton formed the charity with his wife after receiving financial support from relatives, friends and doctors that cared for her. Emily had a form of autism, but instead of being shy and reserved, she was a very social young girl.

Troops receive a big welcome home

A big statewide welcome home celebration for members of the Wisconsin National Guard is taking place today in Stevens Point. The event is for the 3,200 members of the 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, including the Appleton-based 2nd Battalion, 127th Infantry, who returned home in January, after spending several months in Iraq.

Digester will tackle runoff problems

Dane County is moving ahead on a new manure digester. Dane County Exec Kathleen Falk says the county faces challenges: how to keep the lakes clean while growing the dairy industry and providing a source of good jobs. “We’ve taken all those challenges, and in this case one of the answers to them is a manure digester,” Falk said following Dane County Board approval of the twelve million dollar project Friday night. Milwaukee-based Clear Horizons will own, operate, and partially finance the digester. The rest of project will be paid for through bonding through a federal stimulus program, and the state will contribute another $3.3 million. [Read more...]
