The Democratic candidate for governor is defending UW research using embryonic stem cells. There’s been groundbreaking work on Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells, or IPS cells, derived from adult stem cells, at the University of Wisconsin. But Democrat Tom Barrett said Monday that doesn’t mean researchers should be restricted in use of embryonic stem cells. “It was only because of the advances in embryonic cell research that we’ve been able to reach the IPS,” Barrett told reporters during a tour of the Waisman Clinical BioManufacturing Facility on the Madison campus. “To have people tying the hands of the people doing the work here is wrong.” [Read more...]
Ziegelbauer to run as independent (AUDIO)
State Representative Bob Ziegelbauer announced Monday that he is a candidate for reelection to the State Assembly – but not as a Democrat. Ziegelbauer, of Manitowoc, said he’ll campaign as an independent. “Everybody knows that the party system is broken,” Ziegelbauer. “It’s dominated by the special interests on both sides, on both parties. My priority is the people of this communitty, and I’ve always been an independent voice for the people of this community, and this fits me much better than that broken system would.” [Read more...]
E-cigarettes no ticket to promised land (AUDIO)
Doctors are warning smokers to approach the latest quit smoking gimmick with skepticism. Dr. Michael Miller, a Wisconsin physician who specializes in addiction treatment, says any claims to the effectiveness of the so-called ‘e-cigarette’ ought to be taken as just that – claims. “They have not been tested confirm safety and efficacy, and any claims of efficacy are anecdotal,” said Miller. “And every product is actually somewhat different: how they’re actually constructed, how much nicotine is in them, when they are turned on how much nicotine is delivered.” [Read more...]
Seatbelt noncompliance is high
The number of people cited for not wearing seatbelts in our state in a recent crackdown could be more than 10,000.
The Wisconsin State Patrol issued more than 6,300 citations and 500 warnings to vehicle occupants who were not wearing their seat belts. George Silverwood, Bureau of Transportation Safety at the DOT says it’s a substantial increase from last year.
“I believe it’s three or four fold what was written last year. It is a large amount.” He says the higher number of citations is indicative of the fact that Wisconsin now has a Primary seatbelt enforcement law.

Brewers Avoid Sweep
The Milwaukee Brewers avoided the three game sweep in Colorado with a 6-1 win on Sunday afternoon. The Crew exploded for five runs in the top of th 9th to grab the series ending win.
Rickie Weeks and Corey Hart each cracked two run doubles in the big frame and made a winner out of Trevor Hoffman who pitched a scoreless 8th. Starter Randy Wolf gets the no decision after tossing 7 innings, giving up just one run and three hits.
The Brewers will take Monday off before opening up a three game set with teh Twins at Miller Park on Tuesday night.
