Survey finds young women lack accurate STD information (AUDIO)

A UW researcher says what young women don’t know about Sexually Transmitted Diseases may hurt them. Doctor Heather Royer, a UW Madison School of Nursing researcher, said it’s clear many have significant misconceptions about Sexually Transmitted Diseases, and STD testing. For example, regarding condom use. “Young women seem to not understand that certain STDs can be transmitted even with condom use, particularly those that are transmitted via skin to skin contact, like HPV (Human Papiloma Virus) or HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus),” Royer explained. “They don’t seem to recognize that thy are still at risk for STDs, even with condom use.” [Read more...]

Funding approved for racial profiling data collection

The Legislature’s budget committee has approved funding for a program designed to track racial profiling in traffic stops.

The measure passed Wednesday by the Joint Finance Committee on a party-line vote helps lay the groundwork for the system police will use to report data collected during traffic stops. Starting in January of next year, departments will be required under state law to submit information on the race of those pulled over by police. [Read more...]

Packers sign three draft picks

The Green Bay Packers have signed G/T Marshall Newhouse, RB James Starks and DE C.J. Wilson.  The signings were announced by the Packers today.

Newhouse, the second of the team’s two fifth-round draft picks, was a three-year starter at left tackle for TCU.  He appeared in 52 career games, including 38 starts.

Starks, a sixth-round selection, became Buffalo’s all-time leading rusher in just three collegiate seasons.  He missed the 2009 campaign due to injury.  He also holds the school record for rushing touchdowns and points scored.

Wilson, a seventh-round pick, was a four-year letterman at East Carolina.  In 54 career games, including 37 starts to close out his collegiate career, he tallied 192 tackles, including 45 1/2 for loss, and 27 sacks.  He earned first-team All-Conference USA honors each of his final two seasons. 

The rookies are the first three of the Packers’ seven draft picks to sign with the team.

A Minocqua man whose wife was found dead last week has been named as a person of interest. Police are searching for 39-year-old William Schmidt. “Right now they are just interested in finding him. He’s a person of interest. They’d like to talk to him.” State Justice Department spokesman Bill Cosh says authorities found Schmidt’s Toyota abandoned in Fond du Lac Monday. [Read more...]

Appleton man faces 10th OWI

An Appleton man faces his tenth drunk driving offense after an arrest this week.

Hortonville police chief Michael Sullivan said 51-year-old Michael Martin was pulled over follwoing a short chase Sunday night. Sullivan said Martin had empty alcohol containers in the car, and officers smelled alcohol.

Martin refused a field sobriety test and had to be restrained by four officers while blood was being drawn. He’s in jail on several charges, including driving with a revoked license and fleeing police.
