The head of the state Department Public Instruction is calling for a broad restructuring of the funding formula used to determine how much state aid schools receive.
The proposal unveiled by DPI Superintendent Tony Evers in Madison Thursday calls for a fair and practical change to the framework of school funding, without relying on massive property tax increases, cutting budgets, or eliminating educational programs. [Read more...]
The Kenosha Unified School District is saying goodbye and thank you to Joe Mangi for his 43-years of service, including stepping out of retirement to hold down the superintendent’s job the last 3-years because of a resignation. School Board President Pam Stevens suggested a simple thank you is not enough. “This community owes you a debt of gratitude for what you have done in the last three years,” said Stevens. “They have no clue what you have accomplished in this building.” Mangi thanked those responsible for an engraved rock outside the district headquarters with one of his favorite sayings: “practice peace.” [Read more...]
An Asian Carp has been found just six miles from Lake Michigan, the first above a barrier designed to keep the invasive fish out. DNA of the Carp had been found months ago in the lake, a reason Phil Moy, UW-Sea Grant Institute Fisheries Specialist, was not surprised at this week’s discovery. “It was simply a matter of tracking down the few, rare fish that are above the barrier.” Moy cites the massive netting operations as evidence that few carp are in the area.
A Jackson County couple accused of keeping 100 dead cats in a nonfunctional freezer at their home now faces child neglect charges. On-line records show Gabriella Bernabei and her boyfriend Robert Grassi are each charged with three counts of child neglect. Earlier this month, Jackson County Social Services removed the couple’s three children from the home, after the Jackson County sheriff found the dead cats. According to the report, a combination of fecal matter from the animals and other contributing factors made the home unlivable. Along with the cats found in the freezer, 17 cats were also removed and taken to the Jackson County Animal Shelter. Published reports say Bernabei is a Wiccan and was waiting to give the cats a proper burial.

A Wisconsin historian says comments made by General Stanley McChrystal’s staff made his firing by President Barack Obama inevitable. John Hall, Ambrose-Hesseltine Assistant Professor of U.S. Military History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said we’ve been at this point before: President Harry Truman relieved General Douglas MacArthur of command in Korea in a similar situation. Hall said Obama’s decision comes as no surprise. “There’s nothing at all surprising. I think any other course of action by the administration would be not only surprising, but stunning,” said Hall. “There really was no way out of this predicament than to pick a new commander for Afghanistan.” [Read more...]
