Obama’s affection for confection in Racine

The President comes to Wisconsin for a town hall meeting and a little something extra.

Before talking in Racine about the Great Recession, President Barack Obama helped to stimulate the local economy at a local bakery.

Obama discusses economy in Racine

The President comes to Wisconsin to talk about the economy.

Racine has the 2nd highest unemployment rate in the state, at 14.2-percent, but President Barack Obama says it could be much worse. At a town hall meeting, Obama defends his nearly $800-billion stimulus package, saying it helped to avoid another Great Depression.

Family Council claims win for voters

A marriage defender sees Wednesday’s state Supreme Court decision upholding the state’s constitutional prohibition on same sex unions as a big victory for voters. Wisconsin Family Council President Julaine Appling says it’s not easy to get a unanimous decision from the state Supreme Court, but that the justices clearly understood what the voters did in 2006 – the amendment is about one subject, marriage. “They looked at whether or not Professor McConkey had standing to bring the court case, agreed he did, and secondly they looked to see whether or not the two subject challenge had any merit, and they said basically, no it does not have any merit in this situation,” said Appling. Cherries coming early

Plan to pick cherries in Door County as soon as this weekend, according Dean Volenberg, UW Extension Ag Agent. Volenberg says the harvest is about two weeks ahead of normal meaning sweet cherries could be ready this weekend and tart will be ready cherries the middle of July.

LGBT rights group on gay marriage ban ruling

A major LGBT advocacy group is disappointed in the state Supreme Court’s decision to uphold a ban on gay marriage.  The ban is a result of a constitutional amendment approved by voters in 2006 but later challenged by a UW-Oshkosh professor. William McConkey claimed the questions of banning gay marriage and any similar union should have been voted on separately. [Read more...]
