Awaiting a key ruling on gay marriage

The state Supreme Court is expected to rule today on Wisconsin’s ban on gay marriage.

The measure was adopted by voters in 2006, by a wide margin, and UW political scientist Mordecai Lee says that could end up being a factor in today’s decision. Lee says justices serve in an elected office, and he believes that could result in them giving a benefit of the doubt to voters. [Read more...]

Public voices concerns on wind siting rules

Landowners, engineers, wind energy advocates, elected officials and others turned out for two public hearings in Fond du Lac Monday on proposed uniform wind siting regulations. Among the speakers was Michael Hutter of Michels Corporation, which has worked on wind farm projects in Calumet, Columbia, Dodge, and Fond du Lac counties. His company believes uniform regulations will “facilitate the responsible development and construction projects in Wisconsin.” [Read more...]

Soccer comes and goes, again

While soccer’s World Cup continues, for many Americans, it ended when the United States lost to Ghana. 

The World Cup is much like the Olympics for the American Sports fan.  We rally around the sport because just like the Olympics, it’s a worldwide event.  But now that the Americans are out of the World Cup, soccer will be put on the back burner and we’ll forget about it until the next time the World Cup rolls around.

Soccer will go on trying to prepare itself for the next Word Cup in four years and doing what it takes to try to move beyond where the Americans exited this year.

What else will change?  Nothing!  You and I for the most part will rally around our country when it’s time to play again in four years.  The soccer world will continue to develop it’s young talent and we’ll focus our attention elsewhere.

Accident kills former district attorney

A long time Polk County attorney and former district attorney was killed in an accident on his property over the weekend. The Polk County Sheriff’s Department reports that 59 year-old John E. Schneider of Balsam Lake was attempting to demolish a small outbuilding that had been damaged during severe weather earlier this month, when a wall collapsed pinning Schneider underneath. Investigators believe the accident occurred some time after noon on Sunday. Deputies were dispatched to the home after Schneider, who owned a law office in Balsam Lake, failed to show up for work Monday morning.

Racine area tornado gets upgraded

The National Weather Service has upgraded Sunday’s EF-zero tornado in eastern Racine County to an EF-1, with winds up to 110-miles an hour, based on a survey of the damage, including several downed trees. Rusty Kapela, at the Sullivan office, says winds just a few miles an hour faster can make a big difference.”Wind power is incredible. We all know that; just hold your hand out your car window. When you’re going seventy miles an hour and you’ll see how strong the air is.”
